What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

After a club study group this weekend, I found out I had organized my wire all wrong. The 1mm I was using was actually 1.5mm, and I had two rolls of 2.5mm and no 3mm! Ordered some new wire to fix this mistake, and looking into better ways to catalog.

I also picked up two trees from my nursery’s fall sale, Thuja occidentalis ‘IslPrim’ and Pinus parvifolia ‘Aoi’, both in #3 pots.

Attached are a partial before and after of the Thuja, and a picture of my bench with the pine. I’m really excited about the thuja, as it looks quite like hinoki, but seems much easier to work with, and back buds like crazy (a good thing, as all the interior growth was sopping mush and dead)

Three tokoname pots for trees that aren't ready for them or trees that I don't even have yet. But...I want to be ready when the day arrives.

I went one better. I ordered six of the #4 pots...

I sent 2 pots to the FSBC of MI for their auction...and one last year to Jack Wikle's retirement for auction too! (oh and one went to Illinois for the MABA auction last year..hah!

3 Zelkova Elms, they have been mistreated needed water badly. Soaked in water for 30 mins. will continue this till this weekend, and will slip pot into 1 gallon pots this weekend and see if they survive, and do root work in spring.

Do not do this.

You have now saturated the rootball. Allow the tree to recover. It does not need additional water at the roots. Water when the substrate starts to dry out again.

@leatherback, I did for 30 mins this morning and still had air bubbles coming up but had to leave for work. was just going to do again this evening till all air was out. May be just slip pot tonight into 1 gallon pots and water good then just keep up from there. What do you think would be best at this time? I would really like them to live. On covered porch with some morning sun for now.

I would just leave them alone now. And water when the topsoil starts to dry out. No repotting. No dipping into water etcetc. Just leave it resettle.

I’m a little conflicted

I love getting new trees but I’ve totally blown my budget for this season. Fortunately my better half has not called me out on all the boxes of “live plants” that have been arriving at the house.

Mine just rolls her eyes. I sell carnivorous plants at a local shop to support my bonsai hobby so she doesn't care too much.

There’s a window coming up for the repotting of Australian natives and I have a few trees that I’d like to transition into proper pots, so today I managed to grab a few that will become homes for some of those. Buying bonsai pots can be a slippery slope!

I said I was not going to buy another tree this year, but this ones don't come by often... let's see how it does in sunny Texas (under a 50% shade cloth of course).
