Is Bonsai Mirai Live Worth $300/year?

Any one who thinks they have nothing left to learn should leave bonsai, they'll just drag everybody else down. If you realize you can still learn something then go to school or what ever, but don't pillory anyone else who seeks to improve themselves.

The title of this thread ends with a question mark, so there will be those that think it’s worth it and those that don’t. Just because I don’t does not mean I am trying to pillory anyone nor do I think anyone here has. That’s always been a problem on public forums, people speaking how they feel and being chastised for it. Everyone is entitled to an opinion here, even the ones you don’t agree with. In fact you have not stated your opinion on the subject. Just where does Vance fall?

Well worth it. As somewhat of a beginner, I spent a lot of time trying to find books and videos but found that most were severely outdated and redundant. I can't tell you how many "How to" bonsai books there are that provide almost no useful information at all.
I don't like thinking about it yearly though, that sounds intimidating, but instead monthly, and considering what I can spend on coffee in a week, I don't "consider myself rich" by any means because I can afford $20-30 a month.

Out of curiosity, how much are the Bonsai Focus or International Bonsai magazine subscription services?

Well, obviously you have to do the work. I don't think anyone is claiming that simply watching the videos will turn someone into a master.

As for your challenge to mirai users - you typically don't post trees until they are well along. That maple where you merged 3 trees together, you were working on that for about 5 years before posting the images, right? But you expect people who've been using the mirai service for a year or less, to be posting "proof" that the service is worth it.

No one owes you (or anyone else) any "proof" that the service is worthwhile.

Why does everyone seem to not understand the title of this thread. How does someone postulate whether something has any worth unless one can show what he learned and how he applied it. You ask your questions and opinions and I'll ask mine. Fair? I don't question you.....why are you always questioning me. Envy I suppose....not everyone can pull off Bananaman.

I can guarantee you that at one time most all you can learn on that video has probably been said or shared here at one time or another.

Can I ask you a question and get an honest answer?

I can guarantee you that at one time most all you can learn on that video has probably been said or shared here at one time or another.

Any video you are watching. The bonsai community is pretty small and most of the money earners stay focused where the money is. There is a lot in California and I have seen Ryan so many times I don't even go anymore and I can work with him for free at the collection here. I guess if you don't have access then a Ryan video is a pretty big deal. Go to two demonstrations and you have heard it all before, that's just the nature of the beast.

If you had to pay 300.00 a year for this site would you do it? I wouldn't either. I know so many people in bonsai that on any given weekend I can hang with 40 or 50. There is something going on in bonsai nearly every weekend of the year in California.

But you're cutting back to a lignified portion of the branch, which can more quickly build a cell wall to defend itself from infections...

Personally, I experienced this on my little Chinese Elm....R.I.P.
At the time, I thought that pinching the new growing tips in spring would give me more back budding and ramification, but after the second season of that treatment, it got an irreversible case of black spot and died...

Now, I'm not ruling out the possibility that the pinching of new tips and the black spot were unrelated.....but being who I am, I trust my gut....and I think that what I did was bad....

Also, I have no scientific evidence to prove this, but I think that potential dormant buds on a branch are likely to grow if that part of the branch is lignified before cutting, but if you cut a green shoot (aka, fresh tender growth) the branch dies back to lignified growth (aka, hardened off parts).

Sounds like you're saying it's worth $300 a year just not to you. As someone from the UK who doesn't have access to Ryan I'd say it's worth it. I'm hopefully going to a John Trott workshop next month so I may change my opinion then after having the chance to speak to a teacher one on one but for now Mirai is a huge wealth of knowledge without the bullshit, without the assholes and without the trolls. I'm not rich, but I can spend $25 dollars on something I enjoy a month, even if that means skipping lunch, not getting coffee or walking somewhere a few times it's money well spent. If you can't do that then what's the point in life?
