Extended season starting trees indoors

KOREAN HORNBEAM var.coreana UPDATE!!

So here we are 11 days later. They are being co2 fertilized and I am very happy with the grow environment…..constant 80-84 F temp and around 1000 ppm co2 and 60% humidity……69 degree lights off temperature…….should always be 10-15 degree less at night…..or too cold to hot quickly at lights on will make a nutrient uptake toxicity!!!

Anyways this is awesome…..they are getting .6 ec nutrient early veg strength with a root starter mono ammonium phosphate boost for a couple weeks …..can give 20% more roots to a little seedling at the start…….. to increase roots for bio-stimulant uptake in the developing seedling in hopes of an extremely high brix plant.

Really is quite the science in a hydroponic practice like this……ph needs to be correct, cannot over-fertilize,have more water less salts……especially to get the benefit of CO2 and increase the sugar content and have the plant reach its full genetic potential……… Also the seedling variability is interesting too when you have 350 seedlings.
I would love to grow a thousand of them, but I need room for the pines.

As the roots mass increases, and these plants develop a few more weeks, they will develope quite nicely in this grow environment.
I have grown these Coreana var. Hornbeam before and they get very nice colors to the leaves in this hydroponic environment…..(last photo).

My first time growing these in the Stonewool mini blocks, they should turn out very nice with the abundant root pruning phenomena of the mini-blocks.

FIRST ROUND OF CUTTINGS!!

Not to much rush……having 6 months growing time.
I did the math once and it takes 14 weeks from seed—-cutting ——finished sellable starter.

So thats nearly double the time…….at some part of the program I will have to dial down the co2 and lights also to stop the growth so they do not out-grow their place on the growtable.F7795CD5-301F-4E30-B8F4-D359475D8D73.jpeg

NICE AND SLOW GROWING CAN HAVE BENEFIT

These are bulking up a little……settling in with roots……Can already see the increased calcium effect……a shiny gleen of calcium pectate in the plant cells.Total Bio-Fungicide practice without harsh chemical substances.

I will try to maintain a slower growth and the trunk will get quite thick nontheless…..
These have an entire 6 months👨🏼‍🌾5ABA1DF2-9BED-4321-A391-CED1E7C0C719.jpeg3F7C238A-8755-4E84-8CEB-633D872711AE.jpegCCAC8667-9389-4269-A867-2835BB6E0C5D.jpeg60027F6E-D245-4B32-8E0D-EC60B20A91A6.jpeg

ALOT OF GROWING CAN OCCUR IN 6 MONTHS INDOOR GROWTIME

Just for example.I have not really grown a deciduoous tree indoors for any length of time since 2019……the trunks can get unusually thick.

Here is my last attempt for zelkova air layers…..about 5-6 months progression…….multiple specimens…..zelkova

I’m excited for these Hornbeam!8BD2881E-BB40-4F5D-AF20-D7DB38014955.jpegE6EC46C8-F915-4A40-BDF9-6AA437CD5666.jpeg6C26E6F0-3702-44F4-AE81-841876C3E483.jpeg0ECE308C-5032-41F1-91A2-F4E8D26D1550.jpeg101B1F7B-F26B-4EFD-8FEF-147550CCE4D4.jpeg7D1B1A6E-13CF-4FA0-9E4A-31CD55922928.jpegD046F013-46D5-4B14-9DBF-F50FC76981FF.jpegC36670D3-9976-4F07-AC8C-0B43B92EB04F.jpegCD4AFD0C-4D1B-4C65-973B-7B49418C2712.jpeg41B28E44-6FEE-4F22-9CB1-41E23106AEC3.jpeg

Does the “too cold or too hot too quickly” have any applicability to full spectrum LED grow tents for older tropicals? I was in that 10-15 degF drop from day to night But I battled chlorotic-like issues which seemed to be in part from the lights being too close.

It’s a 5’W x 7’Hx10’L poly grow tent.

what do you think are the best LED grow light and set up.. I am going to try to do some growing over the winter to help feed my addiction lol. I have a fish room it stays around 72 degrees year round I was thinking of taking advantage of this and growing some stuff in doors I was wondering what you thought best LED and setup is. the fish room has a dehumidifier so it helps... any suggestions would be appreciated

This is entirely dependent on your setup and personal style. I've had no problems with the cheap grow bulbs and the like off the shelf at the hardware store, but my tropicals winter in the north facing living room window, so it's mostly just supplemental lighting for maintenance. Some trees get a bit leggy over winter. If you're going for full on growth and development, you'll need allot more depending on the species.
Temps play a part as well. I'm broke so the heater never goes above 70F - usually a little lower - and we all wear sweaters, and that helps keep growth in check too.

THE FIRST CROP OF PINES

so these have been rooting indoors for about 2.5-3.5 weeks.
Waiting for a new 70 gallon resevoir……the rubbermaid ones can and will burst open in volumes over 40 gallons.

These are just fine with about a 75% success it seems……..I have learned it is definately best to let stems turn red,but not woody at all….I was making cutting earlier and when I sorayed with kelp..it fried the leaves….leasoned learned for the next round, as their will be another 3 rounds like this to fill my entire table in the growhouse.

YOU CAN SEE THE ONES NEXT TO THE WALL WHICH WERE CUT DURING THE RED STEM PHASE….The 100% success I usually get…..

These are fine for a couple weeks till’ I get the growhouse up and functional…

It is nice in the home because the co2 is usually over 500 ppm!
Great for starters!

@cmeg1 have you checked this site https://www.usplastic.com/ that is the site I have used in the past for plastic tanks. Also for any type of plastic bottle, reservoir, etc... very decent price and variety of items.
Thanks!
I have learned though with 70 gallon resevoirs definately get one from hydrofarm or similiar made for the purpose……THE STORAGE TOTES UNEXPECTADLY CRACK OPEN!!!
Luckily I was in the growhouse when it did……

Active aqua!!

Had a similar issue when I tried using one as a rain barrel. I would go out to find it half empty after it raining the previous day, and assumed it was deer, or maybe nosey neighbors.
Then when I went to clean out the gunk in the bottom after emptying it one time, I discovered that it essentially had no bottom any more.

FIRST CROP OF SEEDLING CUTTINGS AND A NEW RESEVOIR.

So I am finally filling my new 70 gallon resevoir with clean water.

Also the first crop of seedling cuttings is looking nice…..the ones sprayed with too much kekp have bounced back nicely……..another two more crops like this and the grow house will be full.

These will be definately ready for some co2 fertilizationDFFB7C33-B316-49BF-AAB4-D67675C379B8.jpeg88D44363-0CD4-4478-9885-99BBA833EEF9.jpegBB5D7382-5A7E-4455-906C-9020AFC48B80.jpeg87E79888-D299-42EE-9231-C63D8B773219.jpegE0073A2E-EBE5-4A47-B787-93797C0ACC88.jpegF1966715-1050-408E-AC12-8A0B327C2FDA.jpeg4E7704E2-9771-4195-A898-A7403F5EE4B7.jpeg

FILLING THE GROWHOUSE AGAIN!!!

This time I will add a greenhouse/hydro water treatment that seems safe…HYPOCHLOROUS ACID…an extremely safe derivative of bleach……about 1-2 ml a gallon once a week.

That way no dirty water…….rainwater is good outside where the tray gets flushed with RAIN!!

So indoors definately RO and some water treatment to be safe.

I feel relatively co fident it will be a productive grow season for big Spring sales.

MANY MORE TO COME BEFORE SPRINGTIME.

Beautiful. Do you have pictures of the ones from the growhouse issue crop. I'd love to see what that looks like.

They are frozen outside……..I probably should of mentioned that they seemed to be infected with rot on the roots……from the rainwater I was using in the grow house. The heat was approaching 100 sometimes and biofilms grew on the tray.
Could of been the overly warm resevoir too.

I will never use rain in the growhouse again.
Rain is superp outdoors though, because the tray is constantly washed by downpours and also the garden hose.

RO water is great……it was initially treated by the city borough with chloromine.

I will also add trace amounts of hypochlorous acid…..a safe derivative of bleach……there are numerous products out there……they all contain .028% hypochlorous acid.

FRESH HARVESTED ZELKOVA SEED

These are somewhat difficult to harvest as by the time they are ready they fall to the ground.
I have hopes for these because they are brown and hard…….should be around 50% good.

I want to make at least a tray of clumps and perhaps some Brooms……layeredD424FBF2-4326-4074-B11A-07A362133FF7.jpeg1E0C670A-1E58-4406-911A-3CDA61C24600.jpegA7255097-835E-4340-965E-FD3F963D1426.jpeg83902540-B763-4E2C-9B56-39CCB054AE0D.jpegE89FAC6A-3681-43DF-B02D-30B345ADB176.jpeg281CB006-995C-4227-8504-2B875E01F90B.jpeg84305807-03D0-4123-BF8C-840C8CC2E41C.jpeg

I'm assuming the purple stuff is rooting gel, but how do you wrap the girdle, and what sort of medium are you using?

I bet you answered that before, some time in the past, but I'm not going digging through the whole thread to find it.🤪

I mixed clonex gel and hormex #2or 3 powder…………It works very well.

For a rooting medium I open up a 2” stonewool cube and put around the stem and wired the two halves back together………..I ended up peeling the stonewool off………perhaps a better way is in order………the best way would be to find a way to keep the plastic together on the stonewool……..perhaps tape…….and maybe bamboo skewers to keep stonewool together until you up-pot.Then the layer is never disturbed……….short stemmed seedlings would be perfect for this……just put a cube on a cube that the seedling is growing in……….it is just quicker when your growing a couple hundred.
