Extended season starting trees indoors

HAVING SOME ZELKOVA SEED SPROUT

It was very difficult to get seed.I had a local tree and I wanted to very much run some experiments with these to see the possibilites.

The plan is put some under the table for elongated Broom style stems and others on too in the light and make compact multitrunk air-layers.

The Brooms will be layered too.

Wish me luck.

I’ve showed these before…they can be very cool!!
I have been wanting to make these for awhile now and finally have just enough seed( and an indoor fascility) to give it a real effort.

Gotta’ get the stems longer for the perfect broom form though.

The multi trunk are easier as ther are just the unusable brooms ,air-layered.
***** HAVE NOT MADE ANY YET…these are pics from the first idea crop…….the seeds are sprouting though and can finally persue this!!!

I have three months……bedore they need to go outside as my fascility is too hot in the warmth of mid Spring.

THE SIBERIAN ELM GETTING SOME NICE AIR-PRUNING OF THE ROOTS.

I wonder if these even need air-layered since they are so shallow in the 1.5” cubes.View attachment 524841View attachment 524842
Hey Curtis, how do you like the blocks with the tape on the sides vs the ones without? My understanding is that they will hold moisture better, but won't they just root prune on the bottom and not on the sides? I feel it will be like a pot wall, once they hit the tape the roots will turn and start circling?

Yeah, for the most part, root pruning‘s gonna be at the bottom anyway, I have used tapeless blocks that were bigger and worked out good but the small ones will dry out super quick and may not even make the whole day without tape on the sides.

I can air layer of these, but they actually get very big trunk bases with shallow root systems in these little mini blocks…..check the photo…. they may actually have a wider Nebari if I don’t air layer….. the thickest part of the trunk is actually in the little one and a half inch cube …..look at this little sapling how big the trunk base was in the little one and a half inch cube.

It was only about a 2 1/2 month old sapling started in August. Imagine if they go five or six months!!F1430E06-0678-486C-9E26-921F9418E071.jpeg

The siberian elm are at just under 4 weeks and already getting big…very fast growers.

Everything in the growhouse currently is only getting .6 ec…Definately have to add lots of calmag for this though.this is very early veg strength, just over seedling strength nutrient. It is also a 1:1 propogation ratio custom nutrient so they will air-layer and make cuttings very easily and readily.
I am amazed at the .6 EC though. It should give a very robust root system.I am fortifying this with chelaters such as fulvic acid and amino acids…..this will effectivly increase fertilizer absorption by over 20 % so its like a .8 ec really!!!
Also alot of vitamin B magnesium suppliment…makes them very anti-biotic fortifyed against growth inhibiting plant tissue damage and also vigor against any diseases…..It boost iron availability too to keep strong photosynthesis.

The Zelkova are growing nicely and having nice habit and branching. You can also see a flat un der the flood table to get some natural extension of the stems for upright classic Broom style. The shade will stretch them out like this for a bit taller and appropriate Broom style appearance.

You can also see the Mature crop of seedling cuttings…getting terminal budsets already!
Amazing these are at o ly .6 EC fertilizer strength.
Most growers in a commercial setup would be growing at about 2.0 EC at this stage. It would make a very dark green, but at the same time does a pine in my growhouse need this when not actually extending shoots? I think not.More water and less salts seem best now….a very hydrated plant.Alot is going on now in the Pines when they are in this grow phase and energizing in 18 hours of light and not using energy to assimilate tons of nitrogen. They get quite healthy this way before sale.

You can see the new crop just starting to push the mature dark green leaves…..also another 4 flats on the way pushing roots.

Wish I had more Zelkova seeds…….Also the Siberian Elms are a very great project….will have very nice trunks on these in 2 more months.

Really the vitamin b magnesium supplement that’s pretty cool I’m going to have to try that

ROOTS ARE GOOD!!!

I regualrly use a hypochlorous acid water treatment to keep these roots happy and clean. They tend to grow out the mini-blocks alot when a crop is in the growhouse this long.

I’ve decided a low ec fertilizer since there is another 8 weeks or so and they do not really grow candles indoors at all.
Once outside these will grow bigtime!!

The vigor will be instant when these are planted out.Very happy with these.5B23E635-5B37-4F0C-B00C-B0729629DA14.jpeg239F02D3-5AF3-4C6C-A0FC-AF01AA358430.jpeg782A34DD-C308-4D63-81C2-504126D8A103.jpeg43837731-6B71-40DD-91CB-C3052D1FBBF4.jpeg73C09717-191F-4D96-AF76-E26358FE3909.jpeg294A7147-59DA-44EB-B965-99B86C8C03D1.jpeg139D4E7B-36B5-4610-A7FE-607F4F8362FA.jpeg

I EQUIPPED THE GROWHOUSE WITH ANOTHER SMALLER LED JUST FOR THE GROWING SIBERIAN ELMS

The goal really is to get these stretched out quickly towards the ceiling of the growhouse. They will always be in about 400-600 par light intensity. Then get a really big trunk over the next coupme months and proceed to evaluate and see if ringbarking the trunkbase is nessesary for these.Definately some, but the trunks are always about 75% thicker in the i terior of the 1.5” mini-block………I will probably let the customer do the ringbark. They are being grown with a highly effective propogation nutrient and will girdle in 2 weeks or less for sure.

The growhouse will be filled quickly in the next few weeks with the remainder being filled with JBP SEEDLING CUTTINGS already in propogation……another 8 flats!!

These Siberian Elm are great though!!AB230BF0-56FB-4E00-BFC6-DAD14BDD00E6.jpegA771CFB4-A74F-411C-83E0-A12AF9650C49.jpeg1B5AAEE3-3896-40A1-B4B1-D31BC7C7A23B.jpeg4DDF0F94-8CFA-4FF4-83B6-430A07B44261.jpegB79294BC-E13E-4951-BA0E-5BCB84FB41C4.jpeg2A8BF06B-442C-4309-924E-8D0E96843863.jpegB39322AB-C8A2-42E0-9B05-8B90B65BB700.jpeg

ALREADY PLANNING A DECIDUOUS CROP

This crop will be after the winterbpine croo is outside in early Spring.
The deciduous crop will be non-co2fertilized so I can run the ac-unit and not vent out co2 and waste it all.
Another really exciting part of growing these plants is the1000 X more calcium that I’m able and have practiced to make available with use of certain amino acids. It is just as viable and growth promoting and exciting as the CO2 fertilization.
Plants normally take up calcium one ion at a time through the transpiration process. The amino acids I use make calcium ion channels on the roots and actually absorb calcium1000 X more into the roots. So this will still be a very rewarding, crop to grow, albeit they may grow nearly 50% slower they will still have the very healthy vascular system and health that comes from calcium.
These will be able to grow 3 to 4 months in my grow house before needing to bring out around August so they can get hardy and actually survive the winter dormancy.

I have fresh seed of Trident Maple, European Hornbeam ,korean Hornbeam and the regualr Turkzaninov Hornbeam ( salmon pink leaves) maybe a few hedge maple I picked locally, and I also bought a ton of Japanese Quince seed(chaenomyles Japonica) , although they may not flower for 3 to 5 years there great fun to grow.. and they grow quite vigorously and healthy.

So I’m excited it will be very fun and I’ll have well over a thousand seedlings in Autumn.
Here’s a picture of the Chaenomeles japonica I grew before so I know they are very rewarding and good to grow.
