calling my country men, South Africa that is

Gees mate that photo looks identical to a place in Hatfield Pta. But then again the Jacarandas are all over there.....

Mate all I know about Aussie is what I see on TV. The Cassowary is a different bird. Lives in the deep jungle. Very dangerous kicker apparently.

Ja Malema is the younger version of Mugabe....absolute fools.
Yeah Rhodesia was a beautiful place.....the breadbasket of Africa. Mugabe and his gang of bandits turned it into the begging bowl of Africa. SA is going the same way, only at a slower rate. Malema will speed it up radically if he gets in. Like Billy says....SA has so much potential. If properly managed it can be a jewel country.... Mama Africa has everything to be THE standout continent of the world...all it needs in proper management.....:mad::(

If I could find anything to disagree with in this post of yours .... I would! This is probably the wrong forum to say this - but unfortunately the African is doing exactly what Ian Smith and de Klerk said they would. :(

Yeah mate that's the saddest part of everything. Everybody knew where the country would end up.... :(

Anyway before I get to depressed..... Sweden must be a tough place to do bonsai?

..... Sweden must be a tough place to do bonsai?
I figure that Sweden (where I live down south) and NZ have a similar climate. We just have to chose what plants are suitable for inside or outside growing. :D

Yeah that's what I thought to. Not a long growth period here. As you say, you have to make the right choices.
I imported some African acacias and other trees from Cape Town. They do ok if you give them the right protection in winter when they're young . Not so much the cold, but the constant rain.
Do you take all your trees in for winter? Where do you store it inside?

You guys aware of the "start a conversation" feature which allows you to continue this conversation in the privacy and comfort of your own thread?

Most of my trees are cold winter so they stay outside all year round. I usually cover the soil/roots with boughs of juniper for extra protection. My ficus, feijoa, bougainvillea, lychee, and bottlebrush I take inside for the winter. Yeah, I've tried several times to grow acacia but they always die. I even had a couple of South African erythrina but they got so terribly infested with pests that I couldn't keep up with them. What about you? What are your best projects? Do you keep any NZ indigenous bonsai?

Yep but the other SAns wont see it then...according to the thread o_O
I agree. The title itself is a sort of “privacy and comfort” of SA with bonsai as the common denominator, where anyone can join in by way of interest and/or experience. Naturally, if the OP feels talking of bonsai is “off topic” he/she is free to say so. Gate-crashing, however, for the purpose of criticism is another issue entirely. It has nothing to do with bonsai or with the title subject. I don't really understand its purpose.

Wow love that man. Got the little thorns on its leaves to.
I have one to. Planted 20 seeds an 3 germinated. Only 1 still alive and growing strong. Its in its 2nd year now. Keeping it on the dry side. They don't like to much water when they're not growing.
Don't have time now but i'll take some photos on the weekend...

Tell us more about the modern Jhb Billy...

It's certainly not headinig to a where zim is. It's a city that is working in a chaotic way, the people are friendly and is partly integrated, there is a lot of work opportunity here and a lot business happening, the only thing not going for jhb is the currupt government, but let's be honest which government is not currupt. We have elections in 2019 and the ANC is losing support so it's a very interesting time

Only 3 germinated? Strange. Did you nick or file a tiny portion of the seeds and then soak them for a day or two? As long as the seeds are viable you ought to get nearly 100% sprouting success.

Please do take some pics and post them! I had 2, on separate occasions, but I just couldn't deal with the insects so I gave them up. Yes, mine had thorns EVERYWHERE: Leaves, stems, and trunk.

Looks like a cool tree

Thank God for that!

The post-Apartheid era of the RSA is such an enigma for me. On the one hand you had the humanitarian perspective of Mandela ... but on the other hand you had Eugene who carried on as though Apartheid was never replaced and he literally got away with murder. How you managed it I'll never know, but you did! I haven't heard much positive about Zuma but maybe the 2019 elections will put everything back in order. Let's hope!
