What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

Thanks don’t want to get political . But I’m finally getting closer . Wife had a ID problem simple fix . But it’s taken 2 years to resolve . So soon will be able to renew our passports . Then I can drive across the border and set up with a service . That will provide me with a American shipping address . Resolve the ridiculous int shipping problem from USA to Canada . Since Covid cost is insane .
I found this same pot on eBay (probably where I got my 1st one)
and I have to say I got one heck of a deal, (3 for price of 1) but won't be going back
unless the smaller ones become available. They won't ship pots.

Looks decent... how much was with shipping?

I paid $38 for a cubic foot from Build a Soil. Which is almost 30 quarts. It was dusty, but the particles were right between 1/4 - 3/8 with a very minimal amount smaller than 1/4. Problem is they are on back order right now.

Got it yesterday, opened the bag today, was moist, minimal dust, uniform particle size, but it's a firmer type of pumice than my previous purchases.

I was suspicious because it was a little heavier than my previous pumice purchases (superfly and gantessa), so i put some in a bucket and filled it with water, roughly 50/50 sinkers vs floaters, and the water was nice and muddy. I 'processed' about 1/3 of the bag today, a quart at a time, scooped up the floaters with a mesh colander, gave each another two rinses until water ran clear and separated into two bags. Gonna use the floaters first. A few gravel pebbles and lava rock here and there, but overall not a lot of waste or throwaway material.

MUST rinse though, i wouldnt want that unknown mud to get into the roots of a tree. Source seems to be Arizona.

Just curious why separate the sinkers and floaters? I usually just grab a scoop of pumice, give it a quick sift to get fines out and add it in.

I ended up getting 2 of the greens, nice little mame pots
The blue I just couldn’t resist, so I bought it too since the guy only had the one, I might stick a little port in there, think it might be a little shallow for any of my other trees, only 35mm, I kinda need more depth for moisture retention for a day at work when I can’t water them

Some people do that... waste of time. I guess it could be used to identify stones and granite that could be mixed into it, but the only time pumice will float is when it is fully dry or have gasses trapped inside the pores. Eventually they will sink.

From the University of California
Pumice stones. While scientists have known that pumice can float because of pockets of gas in its pores, it was unknown how those gases remain trapped inside the pumice for prolonged periods. If you soak up enough water in a sponge, for example, it will sink.

A shipping scale. I am tired of standing on bathroom scale with a bonsai tree box in my hands. UPS insists on rounding up to the nearest pound so my digital bathroom scale was good enough but LadyRider doesn't like me moving her fancy scale around.

I posted this on the stand thread... but I received this yesterday from Gilmer Woods... time to "make time" so I can finally make my first stand.

The pieces circled in the center, bubinga - 1 3/4 x 1 3/4 x 24 1/8" ea

And the two big boards, front and back. They look so much better in person. I need to find someone local to re-saw them. I only have a small 9" Skil bandsaw, or do the table saw method and rip it with my dozuki. But it is such a waste vs a small bandsaw kerf. Maybe in the future... Rikon Grizzly

Figured bubinga

At the Potomac Bonsai Festival at the National Arboretum, I bought:
A Japanese Black Pine
A 'Yatzu Tanzu' Cryptomeria
An 'Arakawa' Cork Bark Maple
And a Juniper procumbens Nana

Not exactly a bonsai purchase (unless you are thinking cascades). But I purchased a large glazed terracotta pot today in a very Spanish design. The kind of bold design a younger me definitely might have pulled a face at but as a sign of getting older….I really love it 😂😂.

I really like that first one, there is just something about it that draws you right in!
Right? I have a bad habit of picking stuff up at shows to read the price and putting them back down with a sigh. Went through that process maybe 3 times with that pot before I decided I had to have it!
