Should I get this pinion?

I came back to this site, in part, just to check on this one. im glad it's still alive. I've put out some inquiries to collect in west texas. I'm still growing out the pinyons I have. Lots of species. if I were you I could not have resisted the urge to bare root and put it in proper soil by now. are you sure the ball is all clay. it's true that nurserys that field grow trees use clay, but your tree wasn't field grown it was collected (I'm guessing) I can't imagine anyone is field growing something like that. too slow. it's probably 20 years old. if it were to sell at a nursery retail at 200 the grower would sell it for much less like 100, 125. that's a couple dollars a year for the grower lol

Not much has really changed (these things are awfully slow) but I did put a couple guy wires on lower branches to get them in their position. I plan on pruning maybe 1/3 off the top come January then let it be until spring 2018 when I'll repot into a smaller box. I'll post pics after work if you'd like?

Good fortune with this one and nice trunk to build on. Now you know Alvaro suggest asking him to find you special tree:eek:? So many GREAT/FANTASTIC trees coming from experienced collectors personally love idea of personally special tree from one of them:D.

This one is definitely a collected tree... just with a big ass excavator lol. This one is still very healthy, I even watered it for the first time in 2 months this weekend.lol It turned out to be one of my victims of selling the excess and buying some nice (and smaller) material. My buddy Adam has been treating it nicely and it has set some very nice buds for next year. I'll keep this thread updated with whatever he chooses to do to it.

Here's a little guy I picked up this summer. Now is the right time to be working these guys.
Here's the before work picture. 20161208_071613.jpg
I was able to needle pluck and prune quite a bit before my fiance got mad at me for tearing into a pine on the kitchen table at 5:30 in the morning :p:p
So it being 18°f outside, I had a fun time wiring:rolleyes:20161208_081134.jpg
Wow, that was a big change.
You'll notice on the trunk chop there's wire tourniquets. This is to help keep sap flow down so the tree doesn't bleed to death (which these can pretty easily)
Here's the finished product.20161208_123610.jpg
I was hard on this thing so other then a repot in late winter, I'll leave it be for a year, then I'll give it another go lol

It looks to me that you have removed close to 75% of the top of the tree. I don't specifically know a lot about Pinions but I suspect you may have removed too much. From another piece of literature I have devoted a lot of time to, there is a close relationship to Five Need Pines and most of them do not take kindly to this kind of treatment. I would not make big plans to to big things until you know the tree has survived.

I would agree normally but my teacher assured me that they can take a lot of abuse when young, just as long as the work is done in winter. Im sure it'll be fine, but I don't plan on doing much until it shows its as vigorous as it was this year again.
