Damm that will be a S like @MichaelS his s.

I love how you build a nice U in the trunk to put a hook in so you can lower it from your roof ;)

In seriousness.. Love the tree. Great to take the natural cruves the tree had, and putting them a bit more emphasized in there.

Ruben, I very much like your tree.

It’s got a lot of things “going on”, which I’m sure have sparked lots of conversations! Lol!!!

The thing I see that strikes my eye is the straightness of the branches. The trunks are very sinuous (curvy), and yet the branches are relatively straight. I think more movement in the branches would bring them into harmony with the trunks.

Regardless, it’s a cool tree! Thanks for keeping the thread updated!

Thanks for the reply Adair.
Agreed, it looks leggy. These sort off things i find hard to improve. I always doubt when doing those little bends.

If i would do everything people said about this tree, i will end up with only the rootball. Hahahaaa. I really have some affection with this tree.

In april i'll take it a workshop with yannick and jan culek.

it looks leggy.
No, not leggy. The branches aren't too long, they are too straight - the large cascading branch on the left in particular. What @Adair M was saying, I echo: make that stem wiggle around. Sketch.png Also the apex, a bit.

Very interesting tree. ?

No, not leggy. Yes, it does look a bit sparce. It will fill out as it backbuds. It will.

But it could also be improved by layering the foliage in the pads. When wiring a branch out, don’t just go left, right, left, right... some movement needs to go up/down, too. Some twigs needs to be allowed to go up, not just side to side.

I dont have a tree very similiar to yours, but I did have to put in quite a bit of branch wiggles to tame this white pine:

Here is a JWP with a “drop branch”:

I layered the foliage on the pads to give them a bit of height.

Incorporating some of those ideas will make your tree look less “leggy”. Putting in more curves to your branches, especially up/down movement will make the tree look more consistent.

One other thought...

The primary feature of this tree are the sinuous trunks. At least to my eye. You also have two pretty long vertical drop branches. And I think they look out of place. The one on the left seems to drop out of the apex to become the lowest foliage on the tree. What doesn’t make sense is why is it so straight when the trunk is so contorted? Wouldn’t whatever forces that created the trunk shape also affect that drop branch? Same for the smaller drop branch coming off the secondary trunk.

On another tree, those drop branches would be great. But, there’s just too much “going on”.

Still, it’s a cool tree. A conversation piece, for sure!

Thanks @Osoyoung and @Adair M, learning moments for me. I'll take these options/questions with me too the workshop. It's better for the tree that i don't do anything about it at this point in my bonsai career.

Lookin real good Ruben! I am sure you are stoked to have such a piece on your benches. I am sure after your next workshop, you will be even more impressed with it! I love the photo you shared, it looks like something from one of the older chinese books I have looked at. Real nice!

Nice tree! Overall, that is. I do agree with some of the other comments about that straight drop branch on the left, it really does
catch and hold the eye and looks completely out of place compared to all the other movement. Once you deal with that this will
be a real beauty.

Edit to add - that branch looked better in the first post in the thread, it seemed to have a little more movement out to the left with
a slight curve. Is the more recent photo from the same angle?
