I’ve had this Ume since 2021 it was a small nursery stock plant that I purchased and have been letting it grow and cutting it back for the past few years. Last year I defoliated and wired a few branches.

It has grown vigorously this year and I had a design in mind so today I performed partial defoliation and did a rough initial styling.

Should fill in nicely with a second flush in the coming weeks

Is this tree still kicking?

Very nice! I just repotted a nursery stock ume into proper soil and a grow pot and I’d like to have something like this in a few (or more) years.

Thats a very obtainable goal. They grow pretty fast just let some terminal buds elongate.
This one was in grey mud when i bought it from the nursery and looked like crap health wise so i washed the roots out and put it in bonsai soil and it took off after that. Ive never seen it flower though

Is the lack of flowers because it’s still young? I read it can take up to 7 years from seedling to flower… if it’s cutting grown you should definitely be seeing flowers unless your pruning off flower buds before winter.

I have no idea. I believe it is grafted on root stock but not certain on the origin.
