Late Very cold weather incoming be aware!

I honestly don't remember... probably mid to upper twenties for lows at night with daytime highs in the 30's for a few days. My chojubais took a beating and I lost a Goji berry... both are very cold hardy but also tend to wake up very early. Anyway, I won't be letting the quince freeze this time around.
surprised about the chojubai, i have one that i've left out in rather cold conditions in the spring (it's just a stock plant, not something i really value so not worth shuffling in and out of the garage) without any problems. have no idea about the tolerance of goji berry.

Gojis are apparently cold hardy to zone 3... but can be killed by a hard freeze when buds are swelling, or so I've found out.

Yep....Looks like I'll be doing the the bonsai shuffle Tues. of next week down here. I just hope my BC doesn't wake up before then.....I can't move it by myself.

Thanks for the heads up @JudyB ! Passed along the warning...many had no idea. My beautician mentioned to me yesterday of single digits at night coming in. But I didn't realize it was effecting such a large area as it is.

We will have a high of 12 next week during the day one day. And this snap seems to be a longer duration event than we normally get here at this time of year. I don't think we are much out of the 20's all week.

Every day I’m shufflin’

guy in the gold shirt comes in and starts shootin' sparks off his heels!! Tear it apart, bro!!!

....was waiting to see this cat slide in like a cold front.....

22 degrees here, teens tonight ….looks like it will be cold here for a while.
Keep them trees safe out there!!

This is almost exactly what happened last winter. Warm Feb. followed by a plunge in March. It cost me a couple of trees --even though they were "dormant" and under their typical winter protection. Bald cypress were particularly hard hit.

I've got maples pushing hard this week. Have already had to repot one. It's supposed to be above freezing for the next five days or so. That ain't good... I'm planning on bringing a lot of stuff inside for a few days next week.

Yep, my Florida BC is pushing buds and one from Louisiana has a couple on it now. They both will go in the garage. I have 7 others sheltered down in the woods that are still dormant so I hope they will be OK. The spruce, hemlock, and hinokis should be fine though.

Because I will be gone all day tomorrow I will be doing this Sunday...probably in the rain. I'll also be repotting some things and putting them in the garage for a few days.
It's tornado season... let's hope it's just rain!
Fwiw, I'll be working in the yard on Sunday, as well.

It's supposed to snow 4-6inches Saturday night/Sunday. Probably won't be working in the yard. :(

Cold?
Snow?
Say it ain't so!
Hahahahaha!
I cant even see my trees.
Or should I say what's left of them.
Might have a pot sale, not sure yet.
We'll see.

Sunny and close to 70 today and I will be at a track meet for 12 hours, ugh. Normally it is a lot of fun but when I think about how much I have to do! I need a 2 - 3 hour window tomorrow and I should be ok.

Yes, been watching that too. We’re in the low 60s all week then wham back down into the 30s for highs next week. So right now a lot of my tridents, koream hornbeams, larch, Chinese quince, and Jap maple seedlings are enjoying the warm weather outside. I also noticed some candles on my Austrian pine are starting to swell and extend a little and there is a nice new white root sticking its nead out one of the holes in the bottom of the pot so I have to repot it tomorrow then move it into the garage for the cold spell next week. Fortunately all the rest of the plants outside are still holding off but with this string of warm days I an expecting others to join the parade. I may finally have to invest in a small greenhouse if this winter pattern becomes the norm.
So even your tridents you will move in? Just curious because they grow like weeds around me so I have to think they are used to this weather. If it will only dip below freezing over night then warm up during the day are they at a risk? I had all my deciduous trees in my shed the majority of the winter, only because thats the "norm". Still getting the hang of this overwintering thing and trying not to over think it. All my hardy trees like my cypress pines and junipers have done fine without any cover though, they are in a place that gets no wind.
Im just curious because my tridents, JM and hornbeams are all pushing buds.

The prediction for us is a low of 15F wednesday morning, so anything outside that is pushing new buds and foliage will be brought inside the garage. Once trees begin to bud out they start losing their dormancy protection. The carbohydrates stored in the cells begins to move out to feed those new buds and the freezing point depression starts to dissiapte among other things. Plus I have a lot of seedling tridents and J. maples that will need protection. I even have a couple J. maples that have been outside all winter starting to bud out. This is becoming an annual ritual given the new pattern of February warm spells followed by periods of sub-freezing temperatures. It isn’t so much the cold as the extreme fluctuations that are the big concern, especially if the trees start to bud or leaf out.

Looks like I’ve got a warming trend coming on?!59EBAFAE-EBBD-4348-A31E-55C254D1A6D5.png
