Huangshan pine in training.

I'm new with pines, so how do you make them backbud ?
Do you pinch the bud like a JBP?

These are how many flush of growth per year?
They like more water than JBP or similar?

Can withstand frost !?

Be free to post some picts!

- to get backbud, there are 2 ways: pruning the shoot, candle off ; wiring and bending the trunk or branch
- I don’t pinch candle at all, even with JBP
- in its first year of age, it had continuously grown all the way to winter and stopped only in one month when the temperature was down deeply . In the second year of age, it had grown at least 3 flushes until I pruned and wired it last month.
- I watered it as JBP
- according to others in this forum, it cannot withstand the frost !

2 years in HCM also!

I'm just back from my local Arboretum and Found an Huangshan Pine!
So, I live inland and winter temp can reach 15°F /18°F about -10°C

Just a bit disappointed because the needles are very long.
Found Pinus Wallichinia and Pinus Koreansis better in terms of needles size.

Here my fresh pict!

Thanks for letting me know. So, it looks like you can communicate in Vietnamese language, does not it? I was from HCM (formerly Saigon). You should have seen a lot beautiful bonsai in Vietnam, shouldn't you?
Yes, the Huangshan needle is very long (about 20 cm on my seedlings). but I don't think there is any problem for bonsai because we are easily able to reduce the needle length via the pruning and controlling water and fertilizer.

Hi, sure I had seen lot of really nice bonsai.
I have a step brother who care for bonsai hahaha
Also the zoo of saigon had some, they also have a african baobab! (Digitata)

So Huanghshan pine is not cold hardy at all?
As you can see, I felt this tree not really healthy as P.Armandii or wallichiana (both grow really well here) but I don't know what is the condition this tree doesn't like.

That's pretty why I really wanna one when I see I could buy them : NO one have this specie into bonsai in France !!!

I think it is not cold hardy.
If I were you, I would use the tree which is suitable to my climate

Okay. You talked me into it. It’s worth a shot. The pines we have here have needles about 110 feet long lol, if these can take the humidity and lack of cooling in the winter I will be very happy.
I may even order some Darjeeling weeping cypress seeds as well. I have Never seen those before other than in the treeseeds.com website.
I live in Florida too. I know the Japanese red and black pines do well here as I have some, but I want to try these too. We will see how they do here!

It's closely related to japanese black pine and if you've seen those outside of bonsai you'd notice they also have very long needles but we do mannage to get them to reduce quite significantly for bonsai as @bonhe said

Hardy from zone 6 - 9 if you fit in-between there id give it a go. You can find seeds cheap and they don't sell out as fast or as often as jbp

Yeah I’ve noticed that, I just got some seedlings already sprouted actually. So we’ll see!

Yeah but there's still some green towards the trunk. All my scots pine seedlings look similar and that's how my jbp all looked during winter their first year so I'm optimistic for a bounce back come spring
Thanks. It is very interesting to know ! Mine had a light purple color in their first year. This year I don’t see it yet.

I just transplanted 16 of them into the 1 gallon pots a few days ago.
The soil is pumice: perlite: mini pine bark: humus forest product with ratio 1:1:1:1

I almost bared roots most of them with pruning and arranged the roots .
Some young fat root emerged from the trunk closed to the soil surface !

There are a lot of shoots emerging from the trunks.

when I looked at these shoots, I understood why the Huangshan pine has its special branch images in the nature !

I removed all the wires placed on trunks in September 2020

I still have 24 more trees to be transplanted this weekend if it has no more rain .
