How much to prune for hot summer?

If you are planning on doing a big structural overhaul in fall.. Do not prune too much. But yeah, as said before by someone: Prune back the top branches, leave the lower ones alone for now.

Maybe along these lines?
I try to make sure I do not remove so many leaves that the trunk looses all the shade. THat would be my main concern: Sunburn, rather than dessication. Areas that are now shaded by foliage will easily get sunburn if the leaves are gone.

Thanks for taking the time! Ok then, I'll just give it a light trim along those lines

I would not say my elms go dormant in summer. Growth does slow down but there is always some growing tips.
I know that your South will be sunny most of the day but West facing will have the hottest sun of the day. Not the best for any plant in a small pot. Any way to get some shade for the intense afternoon sun?
You will also have to battle reflected light and heat from the windows. I have no experience with that but I suspect it could cause you some difficulties.
My west facing windowsill gets sun from 6pm to 9pm, it is the hottest part of the day but i don't think the sun's the strongest, I'll try and make some dappled shade for it though. The only other option is north facing with absolutely 0 sun :(. This new inorganic soil has got me a little paranoid of not watering enough so I'll definitely be checking it often and giving it plenty of water!

Elms need sun but the roots can be shaded to cool the pot. Whatever you fashion has to let air pass over the pot. A board leaning against the outboard side of the pot, or a couple bricks stacked to be inbetween the sun and the pot would work. The trunk doesn't need sun, so the shield can be higher than the edge of the pot. Whatever it is will also be a sail in the wind, so be careful.
I hadn't though of just shading the pot so it doesn't overheat, I'll try to put something together that won't fly away during the occasional thunderstorm :)

Contraptionalized!

It look like some kind of retro fit, makes me wonder how old the building is.
Ah yes, your rent is, the same, but have this in your view! Lol! That's Chicago that's Chicago.

Sorce
Oh yeah! Lol i see them so often that i don't notice them anymore. Yep they seem to be gas metres. The buildings here are indeed very very old. So many pipes and cables are run on the outside. Location and rent make up for it though!
