Help with huge shishigashira.

dang dawg, i wouldnt mind scoring something like that. I have always heard rule number one in air layering is choose a healthy vigorous tree. I truly wish you the best. If the layers fail, absoutely don't toss this tree, let it grow and try again next year
 
This happens, commonly IMHO, when the cultivar is weakly supplying auxin to the root stock. Sometimes it is a sign that the cultivar is dying. Clearly it isn't in this case. Just a lot of layers limiting auxin flow temporarily.
Thanks for pointing this out. I did four air-layers and there is a ton of growth under the layers and beside the layers. There are three main branches/trunks that have no airlayer. But maybe I should have stopped at two or three since it’s only been recovering for 15 months. Guess we will find out!

I’m feeling pretty confident with the airlayers as this variety has a lot of success stories. Mind over matter.
