Growing some JBP

Hopefully a bunch sprout.I am getting a single t5. 4’ light fixture tomorrow and a couple domes to take cuttings.I already got the heat mat!
Think I will just focus on seedling cuttings this season.
Thinking maybe a Pro-Mix for seedlings and cuttings spread in the trays.
I will squeeze excess water from the medium before putting in the domes.....thoughts for now anyway.Maybe two layer trays that I can lift out to bottom water slightly in case bottom of medium drys out from heat.

Neil's video was the best explaination I've yet heard since Susumu Nakamura in Chicago years ago with Ivan Watters sort of interrupting. Neil's was fully digestible and logical. I also like the" cut them all at one time"....(which I will not do next Spring '20).

Sprouting after a week.

First ones to arrive to the party!!
Happy I scored good seed! Looks as though quite a lot will sprout because the top crust of the medium seems to be lifting up.
Turned on the bottom heat 75 degrees or so.Little fan blowing across about a foot over the seedlings on a cycle timer , 5min on/5min off.
The grow light is about as intense as you can get without supplemental CO2.
JBP seeds are one of the few seeds that seem to enjoy germinating in such bright light.Should be about 800-900 ppfd where light is now at 17” above.I have always germinated them in full Sun as long as they do not dry out.
Should grow fast at 18/6 light cycle
Will be fun trying to make some proper seedling cuttings!
They may be ready in a month.I want to completely remove stem,so I have to get timing right.Also may wait later on a bunch for first cut after they extend considerably and are soft still.Wish me luck.

This one is has had 10 months of growing!
Would of been different if a seedling cutting.The first 1.5” has about 8 branches.Would of been a nice project to make a really squat trunk if there was not a stem involved.

Two days later = about 120 seedlings.
These have really popped out.The 18 hours of light along with 75 degrees or so of heat get things going in a hurry!

Nutrients for cuttings

Did some research on cuttings.
Going to ph my solutions and get a bit more exacting with nutrients and also ways to hopefully induce happy cuttings with abundant roots....we’ll see.
Seedlings are a few days away from starting to elongate. I will feed with Clonex solution which is extremely low nitrogen,but balanced nutrients that are supposed to help pre-cuttings and cuttings.Also some seaweed extract foliage feedings just before I decide to remove stems.
Going to give Dip n Grow a try according to Bonsaitonight experiment with hormones.And probably moisten grow medium with Clonex solution and probably mist cuttings with same solution at a more diluted rate.
Some sort of Pro-Mix for medium with a double tray......,one with holes I can water from bottom and lift out.The bottom heat can dry out the bottom layer of medium if your not careful.Pro-Mix should stay moist for extended periods!
Using a couple 7” humidity domes with a 4’ t5 light.
Can you tell I’m having fun with this?
Marijuana farmers seem the best place to look for advice like this.I searched internet and YouTube for a day lol ✌

I just bought it from Amazon!
Just in time.I bought a few 1 gal. Coreana Hornbeam from Brent to try cuttings over Winter indoors.Will plant Coreana seed also I I can find some.Planting European Hornbeam,Field Maple,Japanese And Trident Maple and Zelkova.I probably ordered a pound of seed!
Some will be started indoors to manipulate early on and rest in a grow bed this Autumn.

I ordered seed for trees that I understand as being easier air layering subjects.Like field maple and Hornbeam I understand can take air layers several inches thick.
So I hopefully can manipulate seedling to put out layered roots and then plant on saucers or tiles in grow bed next season

The manual stresses the variables that can influence success and points out proven methodology for known plants. Specific cultivars or varieties will still need adaptation and experimentation to determine an approach.

Foliar Spray.

Just believing the science I am reading and learning!
Learned of a Virginia Tech 10 year study that confirmed a 5/2 ratio on Humic acid to kelp worked 50% better then the parts on there own.
Fulvic acid is the best for foliar as it passes through very easily transporting nutrients/ supplement along with them? In this case the kelp.
I added a wetting agent and was glad I could still ph the water with a color droplet kit.
I must admit I am impressed with how good Yucca works.Only need 1/16 tsp per 5 gallons! along with the Fulvic Acid and the Kelp.
So I cut the lights off and sprayed.
Really bonded to the waxy needles whereas plain water totally will not.
I read this increases success in cuttings on Mother plants a few times before you make the cuttings.Something like it literally pulls nutrients into the plants from the roots to make it much more vigorous and healthy improving rooting time.
Fun stuff! Kelp was also mentioned in Dirr’s handbook also.

Organic Biostimulants

Ok
So,I am getting my feet wet with hydroponics while I try my hand at Seedling Cuttings!
Must admit it is very fun.Added some Microbes and Enzymes to the media today with a shot of B1.
Weekly the Humic Acid/Kelp/Yucca for roots.
And Fulvic Acid/Kelp/Yucca for foliar .
The Kelp is very powerful,I may use that every two weeks instead.
The Humic Acid/Kelp combo is supposed to increase Iron uptake among many other processes for chlorophyll and photosynthesis augmentation!

Daily they get Clonex /Amino Acids/Yucca.
Amino Acids apparently increase Calcium uptake 1000’s of times more! Reading that increased calcium is EVERYTHING.Increasing vascular properties and thick stems and an abundance of energy without needing much Nitrogen at all.The fan is essential along with humidity between 40-60%, so stagnant air does not slow the nitrogen uptake through the vascular system.
The package of Amino Acid is 7-0-0 but what I understand is that barely any of the Nitrogen in this form is used by the plant because it is in the molecule?Which is good because I don’t want all the initial energy wasted assimilating Nitrogen before I make the seedling cuttings.
Clonex is very mild with all minor nutrients.
Yucca is wetting agent and microbe food and natural fungicide.

Going to give an extra pinch of Phophorus for root abundance in a couple days.
Start using Biogenic Silica from Diatoms,as it is better at helping ‘Dicot Plants’ such as Pines that barely store any Silica at all anyway,or have any need for it really.
Biogenic Silica helps the Rhizosphere and microbes and enzymes produce more energy for the plants though!

Well,that’s pretty much the whole routine...Everything is ph’d at 6.0 which is very important to assimilate all the micro nutrients into the plant.
Also got a very nice EC meter ,so I can monitor effects of nutrient concentrations on growth and folllow nutrient manufacturers recommendations.

They are growing quite fast if you ask me.Extending quite well at 9 day’s!!!!,
Only 9 days.

I remember learning some cool growing techniques from the town pot growers back in the day. They were the first to tell me about humic acid, kelp, and the ability to really push plants to grow the direction you want. You are on a deep dive, and it looks awesome!

Yes,good info.I want to decrease Nitrogen and amplify uptake of other elements like Calcium and Iron to aid in the vascular system and chlorophyl production and have stronger more disease resistant trees.I understand Calcium is king,especially when you can increase its uptake by thousands of times!
Iron has to have correct ph before it oxidises in the media and will not be available.

I gave an extra pinch of Phosphate this morning.
I understand you can increase rootmass by 20% on seedlings if done ONCE in the first three weeks.

Good Hydroponic Media

I believe I have settled on the Grodan Grow Cubes as an additive to my perlite medium for 4” pots and up!
Great moisture AND air!
Anywhere from 20-50%..... You would not want a tree in a pot full of it,that’s for sure.You would not be able to work the roots if you did 100%.
So far I like it better than bark ,as long as paired with equally LITE WEIGHT media.
Should work great outside too!
I’ve read of people reusing it for three seasons then adding to soilless mixes and then eventually to the compost pile and garden.Its made from basalt.That good soil around volcanoes!
