Cotoneaster progression

Good afternoon everyone... today I show you this tree that I bought in 2016 in a garden center near my home. In the first photo you can see the tree after the purchase.
In the second photo the tree last autumn. In spring when the buds start growing I will change the pot

Cotoneaster horizontalis make good bonsai. Regular trimming gives good ramification. Growth can be slow but worth it in the end.

Yes... this is the first branch of this tree.. I've never used wire to form the structure of the ramification

I really appreciate that! So in 2016 you chopped it all back to a little stub? So 2017 pic shows the first seasons growth? Can you prune the roots back pretty hard?

Exactly... when I repotted the tree (spring 2018) I cut all the big roots... and I reduced by half the root system

lovely. looks like a cranberry cotoneaster but im not sure.

im glad i bought a VERY similar looking initial plant as you
at the end of this summer...wasnt the easiest $25 decision at the time.
hardcut and repot next spring and
i have at least two cuttings rooted from it already as well

That little tree is looking great Steve! maybe a haircut soon? it looks like you cut it back pretty hard each year. short internodes and what appears to be decent branch taper. How many times per year are you cutting back? Are you cutting in the fall? It looks like in the winter pics above the tree had been cut back. I'm trying to decide what to do with mine. Thanks for all the updates!

I cut the young shoots every time that they have 3/4 new leaves… so it depends on the weather that I have every year

When I bough the tree on the pot I saw the name Cotoneaster horizontalis…. I don’t know if it’s the same tree
