Collected Texas Persimmon

Here's a pic of what I expect may be the potential back, showing the trunkline (and several scars) pretty well.

And here's probably my favorite potential front at the moment.

Growth has slowed down in the heat, but we're retaining our green foliage. Hopefully we'll retain it longer than August this year.

Starting to see some blackening on the ends of the leaves, especially in the upper areas. I think it's probably heat/sun related, to I've moved it into the shade, where it will stay until September when it starts cooling off. Hopefully we don't lose all the foliage by August like last year.

Man i really hope that turns out. has such great movement

Thanks, it's pretty weak, but the fact that it's still kicking is encouraging. I'm going to just keep it in the shade all summer and let it build strength.

Its good we've have a mild summer so far. I'm taking your advice and will wait until late summer to dig up a few. Was able to grab some swamp bald cypress from Louisiana this last week.

As a mid summer update, the tree has been kept in the shade since I noticed that foliage in full sun was getting scorched and withered. The small bit of growth it has appears stable, and has gradually hardened off. This time last year it had shed all its foliage, so I think it's doing better, but it's weak. I'll try moving it into more light around October once it cools off, right now it gets misted daily with the rest of the garden to keep it cool on these 100 degree days.

Can you go dig up a crappy ugly one right now and see if it does better with summer collection?

I've sent requests to my ranch owning friends for permission, and I'll keep you updated.

A friend in the country has confirmed he has many crappy Texas persimmon suitable for scientific inquiry.

just send it to me when you are done

I hate to say it but this looks to be nowhere near stable yet. It needs to be left alone to either recover or die. I think the artificial protection on buds through misting and bagging has made the weak tree move resources it doesnt have to growth it cant support.

It's been treated the same as the rest of my garden since spring. I agree it's not out of the woods, but there's also been no visible decline.

Crappy ugly ones dug up and potted. Separate thread incoming after I get my body temp back down to normal.

Now that it's cooling off, I moved this tree to a place where it will get a little bit of dappled morning sun instead of constant shade. Despite not adding much top growth this year at all, it had rooted through the bottom of the pond basket into the earth beneath, so I am encouraged.

I do think that most of these roots are actually from grasses growing up into the pot, but a few small ones are definitely persimmon roots. Encouraging nonetheless, and means the tree itself probably didn't even notice being moved.
