I would normally not start a thread for a collected tree shortly after collection. I typically like to wait at least a year to ensure its survival. But I thought I’d make an exception for this tree.

Collected…well…yesterday. I found an area that has quite a few about an hour north west of Abq. So I’ll def be going back. I’ve always loved the mature massive specimen of these but never found a good bonsai size one worth collecting near me.

The foliage is def its weakest attribute as many of you know, but I feel with a tree at the proper scale a more loose, droopy foliage can work. This one has an awfully thick base, great taper and bark, in a not so tall package. I was able to get an EXCELLENT root ball in field soil that was far better than the clay soils we have all over.

So, wish this tree luck everyone! I’ll post back once I know it’s made it or kicked the bucket!

Wow, I'm really pulling for this one! It's my all-time favorite juniper. In their natural setting, they are spectacular. As bonsai, I really believe they have potential, but I haven't found very much in my research about bringing the growth back toward the interior, or increasing the density of the foliage. I'm excited to follow your progress.

A buddy of mine had one. It gave up the ghost this year. He said it would bud back on old wood very easily before though. IMG_1451.jpeg

Out of curiosity, has anyone attempted to graft itoigawa to one of these? The bark is really interesting on these, hope it makes it!

I know @markyscott is currently grafting some variety of shimpaku onto a small Alligator. But not sure what the state of the grafts are in.

One of these years, I'm going to make it up there and hire you as a guide and tutor, and maybe come back home with a one-seed juniper, alligator juniper, and/or a piñon or two or three.
One of these years. Bucket list.

Excellent find! Please keep us updated.
