Its beautiful Billy. Love that little leaves man. I cant see that it getting pot bound at this stage can do it any good. That is still a very young tree, and far away from needing to be in a bonsai pot. The most important now is to develop the root structure, nebari and trunk thickness. I found what works well for me is to plant it inside a biggish flat plastic container filled with a good open mix. Its the next best thing to planting it in the ground. You get the added benefit of controlling the roots to...Storage containers works well. If it has solid sides, then drill it full of holes (bottom and sides), and put it in good fertile ground. A few times a season lift it, and cut the roots that grow outside the container. If you keep doing that the container fills with finer roots, and you get the benefit of faster growth to...The black one on the left work very well. Its very sturdy and lasts a long time. Like said I have to drill holes in it. The blue one is cheap stuff and breaks easily when I lift it. Have to be super careful...

I don't have any trees maturish trees. Started about 7 years ago. Not many worthwhile trees to dig here, so I'm mostly starting from small. Did buy a quite a few nursery trees and layering them off. I now have about 200 in pots and shallow containers. Here is some photos of my goings on...:p

JM osakazuki. I layer it in the colander filled with bonsai mix and chopped sphagnum. When it roots I remove it and put the colander in the ground. Lift it 2 or 3 times a season and cut the roots that grows outside the colander. That way I quickly fill the colander with fine rooting.

To my surprise the layer flowered when it started pushing leaves

...and after. Bottom left. Mid section middle and top on the right. I now have 3 trees to play with.

Better pic of the two top sections...

We have a lot of pumice blocks on the river banks. I collect them, hollow them out and plant satzuki azaleas in it...

Fredman. Loads on the go and I like it.

I got my first bonsai in December 2005 and since then started to build my collection. But it really took off this year when I eventually joined a club and my hobby just exploded and went wild.

My father in law passed away and left me quite a few established old bonsai which I am now busy working on refining. But also got so many new projects going. My garden is split into 2. One side everything in bonsai pots and the other side everything thickening up in the ground and growth pots. Man this is a lekker hobby. image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpeg

No I do not. Will have to have a look and see what it looks like

I really like how that window opens to the yard.

What the hell is that giant white thing on the floor?

Are you talking about the 3 white containers on the ground or the fat pug lying down on the veranda floor.

If it is the pug then that's my boys dog - Pepsi. Lovely old lady

If it is the white containers then the one is a Celtis Africana - White Stinkwood and the other 2 are Ulmus Procera - English Elms. I went on a dig and I brought the 3 of the back.

Feel free to have a look

Hello, I'm also from SA. I'm new to bonsai and was hoping to get into contact with some bonsai nuts in the area, to learn more about the hobby. I am also interested in getting involved in some bonsai dig expeditions. I live close to the JHB cbd, and finding suitable sites to dig up trees is difficult. Thus far the only bonsai expedition I've been on involved me taking cuttings from roadside trees.

Bye Bye

Hey Wax. Welcome.

I have to agree with you on finding a dig site. Our club went to one this year for the first time in ages. Also only because a friend allowed us to come and clean up some unwanted trees. Would love to find a nice dig site for a Wild Olive or 2.

Hey wax

Good to have you here.

I'm lucky, I have all sorts of trees sprouting up in my Garden, I have tons of white stinkwoods all over the place, I actually transplanted 6 into a tray today, maybe I can give you one if you want. I also have some syringa trees all over the place (I'm not a big fan of them to be honest.

@Dorian do you have any idea where bonzai Boyz in PTA is?

Hey Billy I do not. I only have their contact details. I think they may work from their home because that is all that is available.

Their Website is not working and their Facebook page looks a mess and hasn't been updated for months.

I do not that BonsaiBoyz Pinetown (The main one) is closing as they are moving to Cape Town.

And by the way it's not the one by chameleon village that one sucks it's way past on that same road
I got my first Acacia Burkei - Black Monkey thorn from them, the same one I posted on here earlier. Very nice nursery. I do agree that the one at the Cameleon village is no good.
