Nah you lost me mate. I'm talking 15 years ago. Things have no doubt change there. Don't even know if they are there anymore....
 
Yeah I used to buy loads of trees there when I did landscaping. They specialized in SA natives. Used to have a corner with damaged or missformed trees that wont sell to the public. Perfect for bonsai. Man they had some good varieties.
Round the corner from them was guy that had a plot full off bagged trees. Root pruned and trimmed annually. All lined up and ready for sale. Thousand of different ones. All well aged. He said to me these Apiesdorings (in the bags) are around 15 years old. He pointed to his house and a big Apies (about 20meters) next to it.... These ones in the bags, and that one (in the ground) I planted together when I started. Really put bonsai in proper perspective to me right there and then... These small ones and that huge tree are the same age...:cool:

Just looked on Google maps. They still are there. Name has changed to Flora R.S.A.
Their name used to be Patryshoek Kwekery not Strydfontein....(just remembered)

Good to know as I am out in that way every now and then. I was out that way about a month ago to visit another nursery when we went on an outing with our bonsai club. Ferox nursery is run by a guy called Attie Louw. He must be one of the best Acacia Burkei - Black Monkey thorn bonsai growers in the country. He also has loads of Baobabs. His nursery area is filled with Succluents, Cacti, Lithops, bonsai etc. Way to many pictures to post but should you want to have a look -

Here are some of his cacti that were flowering and his Acacia Burkei.

Man oh Man that is some beautiful trees. Yes I know Ferox. Been in there when he started out. I never was into brood bome very much. He didn't do other trees then. Man that is impressive. thanks for putting up the photos Dorian ;)
 
Looking thru new posts. Bang...the number of superior trees! And the singleton pics are worth a few looks. Acacia as well. Fairly rare for me to come across pics of them. There are several species here growing in the desert scrub or on the sides of dirt roads Makes me wonder what I am missing. Probably hard to move. Long tap for sure. Anyway, just great pics!

I'm lucky, I have all sorts of trees sprouting up in my Garden, I have tons of white stinkwoods all over the place, I actually transplanted 6 into a tray today,maybe I can give you one if you want. I also have some syringa trees all over the place (I'm not a big fan of them to be honest.

Thanks for the offer, but after reading this thread, I'm more interested in getting my hands on a coral tree. Would you perhaps know of a place where I might find a coral tree in JHB to get some truncheons.

Coral trees roots very easy. There is al lot around all over people's yards etc. Pick your colour and take/ask some cuttings. You can go thick...like in real thick. They grow easily...;)
 
I agree with Fredman. Cuttings do root very easily so go and look for a really thick branch and get that rooted and start from there.


I have one Coral tree and it is definitely one of my favourites and I have been working on 2 of my dad's that had been slightly neglected. I repotted both of his coral trees and we are working now on getting them 100% healthy again. They are very forgiving trees so if you miss a water or 2 it is not the end of the world.

I have never been able to reduce the leaves. I cut off the middle of the 3 leaves as that is what seems to be the norm. But apart from that the leaves on mine can become quite big
 
Hello everybody,

I just wanted to find out if anyone knows where in Johannesburg I might find diatomite (diatomaceous earth) kitty litter or oil absorbent. I've read that this material is a suitable bonsai growing media. Has anybody had any experience using this stuff?
