Bonsai/ pre- bonsai tree swap

I have some 4 year old Shimpaku cuttings. I would part with a few if some are interested. I'll Post pics tomorrow. I have done just basic wiring to put movement in some of the trunks.
What kinds of trees do you want to trade for? I know some people are certainly looking for a Shimpaku. Heck, I might offer you something for one- post some picks! Can't have too many Shimpaku...

Not sure really. Trident seems to be doing well in full sun down here so I might go for one of those. I love japanese maple but they only do well if under an oak tree all summer which doesn't do much for the growth. The most hardy I've found is GLOWING embers. I would go for an elm possibly.

I think Elms are probably a great choice for your environment. JBP oughta do great there as well.. I have seen them doing well MUCH further south (Fort Meyers area at Wiegert's)

JM... Yeah.. You are probably right on the wrong side of the "too warm" line for them. The sun can be handled- you just have to keep them in sun as the leaves break in the Spring.. The short winters are the problem I think... That and the BUGS! Even on the coasts here in SC I know people who swear they can't keep them alive long because of the weather and bugs (Beatles)...

Never!

I wanted to know if anyone has a seigen maple, kiyohime maple, shishigashira maple that he could make some cuttings for me. They have to be cuttings as they will be shipped bare rooted in dormancy.

I would have to buy them though...

Please help!
I don't know if I can ship all the way to where you are and keep the cuttings alive. I do have a kiyohime and if I get some cuttings to root I'll let you know. This year I planned to let the tree rest and told myself "no trimming!" and have been true to my resolution to far

it is a nice tree but boy, it is a SLOW grower. Like, maybe I'll get an inch of growth this year

Erb, that is slow. I must have had at least 8 inches of growth this year on my landscape Kiyohime.

BTW, I have some Toyo Nishiki quince available if anyone is interested. Would like their young leaves to harden before sending them out though.
Some trident cuttings look fresh with new leaves, but I'm going to leave them alone for a while longer just to make sure they take.

I know it's slow! I put it in a bigger pot to try to speed up the growth. It was in a 9'' bowl bonsai pot and now it's in a 24'' huge bowl. We shall see!

I actually got a chinese and a japanese quince last winter. The japanese grew very slowly and is now losing most it's leaves due to the heat. The Chinese is still growing strong with no sign of stress. So for me I'm guessing jap quince aren't a good fit. The kotohime would be nice but I am not sure if a young cutting or layer would survive. It seems I need more established jap maples with lots of roots to survive my climate. Dont think pics of the shrimps will happen today as we are having a major thunderstorm today. Eric can you guide me through the rooting of a shimp cutting? I have heard take them when they are dormant?

Drew, which Japanese quince do you have and how long have you been growing it? I've moved my all of my Japanese quince 'Toyo Nishiki' into indirect sunlight, and I water them well. They grow like weeds.

The grower said it was "dragons blood" I believe. New growth is now just wilting. Don't want to clog thisbl thread up with info too much since it is for tree swapping. Sorry mike and eric!

NP- My Japanese Quince seem to be among the quickest to wilt in the heat. Just have to cut back on the sun and water the Hell out of them. They are thirsty little trees! The regular, non- dwarf varieties grow like weeds when happy.

is yours grafted? Mine is growing on its own roots

The mother is grafted; growing well all around. I have an air layer from it that I've had in the ground, and it's going on its second year now. Has three shoots that are pretty strong. This is up for trade if anyone is interested send me a pm.

Here is the first shimp I'm offering for trade. I would say 1/2 base to be safe. Could be more under the soil. image.jpg

No bites. No worries. I will continue growing these out and post next year to see if anyone is interested.

Half tempted to jump on number 2. But I'm taking cuttings from everything I have. Including the junipers.

They aren't going anywhere except my benches so we will see what comes of them next year

I will happily trade you an elm for one! Would you prefer a Chinese Elm root cutting that just started growing a couple weeks ago, a Jackie Hiller Elm cutting from last year that is growing like a weed or a small Winged Elm dug from one of my houses? I have numerous JM cuttings as well, but they probably are not ready for shipping!

If I get my choice- probably #2?
