Bonsai/ pre- bonsai tree swap

You can never kill too many trees. The key is to not kill them the same way twice. Eventually you start running out of new ways to kill them, and that means you're getting better!
Exactly! When I was president of a small orchid society, people would come to meetings and tell me in shameful hushed tones that they had killed an orchid. They were always shocked when I said "great, you're not an expert until you've killed at least a hundred" . . .

One of my favorite quotes about plants is something to the effect of: you don't truly know a plant (/tree) until you have killed it at least three times!

That's bullshit ! I have tried Japanese black pine 3 times and killed all three and I still do not have the first idea what I did wrong, so still have no idea what to do right. lol I am not even sure if they were JBP or not . o_O

Yeah, but you KNOW the tree now! You "know" you can't do shit with it! LOL

So, I am finishing up repotting stuff... I have some really nice looking Satsuki Azaleas! Growing like weeds, lots of roots.. I will try to post more pics this week of some stuff I am willing to trade. Most the Azalea cuttings were done a few weeks ago, show dramatic growth and should be ready to ship.

I have a couple decent little Shimpaku that are also ready for swap, but I should have dozens more next Spring!

Elms-
Jackie Hiller:I have a couple that are super healthy, pretty small but they are fast growers. I read they trunk up pretty quick if you grow them out.
Winged: I have two or three small ones collected from my rental property last year, these are larger than cuttings. Can post pics if anyone wants to see them.

Maples- again, Rubrums out the wazoo!
Trident... A couple cuttings from last year are... Struggling. Not sure if I want to get rid of any of them right now. I have ONE I would trade for something cool.
JM- I have some regular old Momiji seedlings... Would be willing to trade one. I am trying about 35+ cuttings this year- most have been rooting for 1-2 months and nearly every one leafed out strongly and is looking good. Might have my own Maple tree farm this time next year!

Just some additional info on what I have to offer.

I have acquired a Chinese Quince from a friend, and I plan on starting a little tree army from it, so I do not need that species any longer..

Still looking for Chojubai, most any type of interesting Maple, JBP, JWP, JRP (Pines I have found difficult to propagate from cuttings, so I will take as many as I can get...), Scott's Pine, Crabapple, Toyo Nishiki Jap quince... Throwing in a new option as well: pots, wire, tools... Got some laying around you don't want/ need? Rather have a new tree to play with? I am always in need of wire! Always looking for more pots as I am potting trees now into actual Bonsai trays at a rapidly increasing pace... Need some better concave cutters- mine are junk!- and I need a good pair of wire cutters, not the scissor style... Lemme know if anybody wants to trade!

Great idea....if I had some I'd definitely be open to trade for a different tree. Do any of y'all sell these cuttings? I know Bonsai is a journey. I just picked up 3 JBP cuttings that are 3 years old, I know I have a few years of growing before I can even think of Bonsai.

Selling small cuttings is kind of not cost effective over the Internet unless you have some sort of incredible deal on shipping I have found. In the end you might sell someone a $10 tree and have to charge them $15-20 for shipping! I don't know how the bigger places do it...

PM me if you want to talk about it, I don't sell many trees- most of the stuff I have gotten rid of was gifts for friends and family- but if you are just looking for some cheap stock, I can try to help you out!

Dug out all of my trees last 2 weeks. V.C. are every decidious cutting I had going from last year. F#%÷:rs! Starting a new batch. Little bastards ate only those and chewed on a little bark on the bigger ones.
Crap!

OK since there is this thread I will just ask :)

As you may know by now I live in Lebanon and I am very short on interesting material, my wife will be in the US in early June and if anyone would be ready to part with small cuttings (small enough to fit in a luggage) I am looking for

Trident Maple
Satsuki Azalea
Premna Mycrophilla
Arakawa maple
Flowering quince

I have nothing to exchange but will be ready to pay

thanks

Pyracantha:DSC01134.JPG Adding some pics of what I have up for swap, just to give you an idea of what I am offering. Some super healthy Satsuki! Oh, and for the guy in Lebanon, I do have some smaller ones... I don't know how to get it to your wife though. Where will she be in America?
DSC01128.JPGJapanese Flowering Quince- Dark Pink/ Red blooms, very pretty!
DSC01133.JPG
Winged Elm- has a fat little stubby base, collected from a yard at a rental property I have... DSC01137.JPG Shimpaku. Small, but healthy, good roots... Should grow like a weed next year when it is really established. Put it in the ground and I bet it will expand quickly for you! I have a couple around this size or a little bigger. The one behind is one of the "twists" I did this year, not looking to get rid of it.

Ok, first trade is happening TODAY! Thanks Thumbless for working with me, I am excited! I have at least one or two more in the works- this is fun! I just love getting new species! I especially love the trees I can propagate easily from cuttings, but when trading Ihope to get more Pines because AJ have found them hard to propagate and need to add a few to my collection.

Anybody else want to make a deal? I have more than what is shown in the pics above... If you are interested, let me know and I can get more pictures posted if you want!

Thanks!

Actually a marine species called Tautog a.k.a blackfish

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tautog
Interesting... I have heard of them called Porgy. How did you kill so many? Was the thesis for Marine Biology? That was my first major in college! I wound up getting my degree in something else though.

And... Aren't all fish a "marine species"?? LOL ;). Jk

Yep I have a masters in marine environmental science.
We fished for them every weekend (weather permitting) from May through October for 2 years. We caught most with rod and reel and did catch some with traps. I had a permit to kill 500 per year any size and out of season for scientific research. I had a full time job and was going to school part time so I could only collect on weekends.

Porgy is actually another species here also called 'scup'
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scup

Around here all fish are pretty much 'marine' but Im sure some inland states would beg to differ.

Wow, quite the fish slayer!

Good point.. Should have said all fish in the SEA... Lol

I just started some Arakawa cuttings yesterday. I have about 18 that will hopefully root. If so, I would love hornbeam or other maple cultivars....hell, anything really.

In your climate I might recommend a Japanese quince! :)

I have a couple...
Lemme know if you get an Arakawa to strike- Always looking for more of those!
