...and next a really hard freeze(down to 21F) should fry the remaining leaves off of what's left, which is a lot. Would it be best to protect the trees in this case, since they may not be totally hardened off for winter conditions?

Trees packed in the garage for a couple of days. Frigid weather hitting the Northeast. Tonight will be 16F! Back out again in the garden on Sunday when temps normalize again.

Lots of beautiful fall color in my area lately (which will all be crispy brown tomorrow). I think the color has been enhanced by the warm autumn weather delaying the time of color change until colder temperatures and a shorter photo period than when the trees usually change color.
