Looks like you are contemplating the vagaries of life. How about the inevitable demise of deadwood? Not a frequently discussed Bonsai topic. Today I began to apply an approach used by Kimura for exposing live vein and changing the position of the root ball, Couple of photos to suggest the direction. Ground layer if successful will shorten the tree and provide a new foundation. Sierra Juniper deadwood not too permanent in a rain forrest climate!

I've been neglecting this 4 junipers for almost 3 years, and now they are claiming some attention from me. I'll have to repot and maybe style....

Also, now that I got by mail the white slab ( a kitchen diatomaceous earth mat )
I will be working on this project....

Put the Layer in place today. Now the waiting game begins! Will it take one or two seasons! Never tried to air layer the live vein portion of a Juniper before. Took the safer route by drilling small holes, treating with rooting hormone but keeping the main flow connected. Many junipers will ground layer fairly easily so I felt this approach was safest rather than the usual ring bark or tourniquet method. Particularly due to the age of this collected tree and the history associated with it. Will be a challenge to style as a shorter tree. The other option would be to channel the live vein and twist/bend it to compact while retaining the existing root ball. Had trouble visualizing that as appearing believable in the long run. Removed the Ghoul from my commissioned pot. As it was definitely an experimental project. The aluminum mesh inside it...was having a chemical reaction...and it began to fall apart. So Victor will make me a mud man ghoul...as a nod to the one removed.

Nothing bonsai related but I did plant a ton of flowers today and my back is killing me. It's hell getting old. I might give my trees their "before moving outside" trim tomorrow depending on our Mother's Day festivities.
I hurt my knee a month ago...cortisone shot felt good for a few weeks, and now my hip hurts after yard work. wtf! Where's my quad cane? 🤣

my back is killing me
Ditto
Walked down the road and barrowed and walked a tiller home
(Wed I spade up the tomato bed, shoulda barrowed the tiller then lol)
Tilled the ditchline where i ditchwitched for water and electric last fall and sowed about 2.72 million Ky Midnight bluegrass seeds. Scattered fertiliser and traw and watered it all in. Also mulched the tomatos with straw and walked the tiller back to "farmer Johns".

Moved my Austrian pine to more Sun.
It's been in this korean pot buried in the ground on shady side of house for probably 10 years neglected. Longest needles are 7 inches long but they reduce ok.

My Bonsai Trophy - Demo report got published :)

Best part of it is.. I wrote it for the trophy team (and the book they bring out). However, they decided to share it with some magazines, and .. Bonsai Focus decided to publish it in a full 4 page spread with great pictures. (at least in the dutch edition; If you have the English and it is in there too, please let me know!) If you look carefully, you see me photo bombing Ryan in 2 pictures.

Such a great surprise!

Then we did mother's day with my Fiancée's family and took one of our nieces out on the abandoned railroad tracks to "explore" and found some very interesting eastern red cedar growing on the tracks.
