Finally started seeing wee little buds on the nursery can of Pocomoke crape myrtles I ordered last fall. I was beginning to think they had not made it through winter despite being well protected all season. The can was packed solid with roots and all the trees were hopelessly intertwined so they ended up all receiving a 90%+ root reduction. I’ve read Myrtles can be near indestructible so I guess I’m putting it to the test. The next few weeks will show!

Actually yesterday: Back at my volunteer position as docent for my club's bonsai pavilion at https://www.novaparks.com/parks/meadowlark-botanical-gardens
Between 10 AM and 5 PM, I had 100 visitors with tons of questions. I basically talked non-stop for 7 hours!
I invited many inquisitive people to the Potomac Bonsai Festival next weekend at the National Arboretum.

Every year I get pine seeds that sprout in my trees because of the squirrels that stash them and this year I’ve been trying to propagate them by taking seedling cuttings and this one made me laugh, a seedling growing out of a seedling cutting that I bought from Curtis on here 😂

Looking good! :) Your BC is more leafed out than mine. I kept my BC (zone 4 hardy) outside during the winter and yes it was frozen solid a few times. Just remember to give those BC some dormancy they need, before you wrestle them into the basement.

Hey, if they'll survive NOT in my basement, they're going into the garage in the fall - they'll benefit, my spine will last a couple seasons longer. Everyone wins. They had a rough late-summer last year so I wanted to baby them - this year they're just getting watered and fertilized and lots of sun and fresh air to get them good and vigorous before I try anything else with them.

Photo tax, albeit from yesterday - potted up a JBP I had from a workshop last year. First time working with a funky-shaped pot so I used some muck along the sides and need to moss it up in the next few days:

Got a Foemina over the weekend and potted it up. I had a tough time anchoring it because it had very little thick roots and only fine roots at the base and a very shallow pot so no chopstick tie down method. I ended up covering sleeping the wires with some tubing and just cranking down pretty firm. Had to bring it inside to finish the job because the wind picked up.

The plan is to take a good bit off the top next year assuming it makes it, and that should help with the top heaviness. For now I’ll just let it grow and hope it survives ok.
