Yesterday I dug up a couple islei nursery discount trees that I had thrown into my landscape a few years ago. They were the $3 leftovers at the end of the year. Unfortunately my native plant garden shaded most of them out so they're struggling. This hemlock is the only one I photographed because odds of it living are slim and it could have zero needles tomorrow. Hopefully time in the greenhouse will make it happy.

Also fertilized with maxsea and stared at my trees. Trying to figure out which ones to take with to get feedback from Suthin about in two weeks. Here's a random shohin Boston ivy I dug up from my veggie garden last spring. Bonus of an urban home is the weird volunteers that pop up around my yard.

Technically this was yesterday, but I applied wood hardener to a piece of driftwood I found locally. Made my own muck, and created a really cool accent with it using oriental bittersweet, ferns, collected moss, and succulents. Looking forward to the image once it fills in!

Before work I removed the last pieces of wire from my Japanese hornbeam. I put a thin piece of reminder wire on the left side sacrifice I'm growing out. I have had brain farts that lead to me removing sacrifices too early.

Dug some of the staghorn sumac runners out of the yard. Put one clumpy one in a pot. We'll see if it survives.

Took the day off work today to do chores and sleep in. Took a bit of wire off trees, such as this bald cypress. Also prepared for a demo at the event this weekend at the Pacific Bonsai Museum.

Looking forward to separating this layer soon. I set it last year but didn't see much for roots. Anyone else notice AP Katsura taking longer than average to layer?

Oh jeez, I hope it's not too late to start some air layers!

Photo tax: My young BC's that I got from the Arbor Day Foundation. 8/10 have survived!

Trimmed my Ficus Benjamina that I've been growing as a houseplant for 13 or so years. It has scale so I threw it outside. The leaves got scorched. Then the wind blew it over and broke the pot. After work it will finally get some rootwork and a larger pot.
It has a ficus pumila growing up it because I think I'm hilarious having a ficus on my ficus. That also has scale.

A friend and I took part in a Japan day hosted by the Japanese community in Finland. It was nice to display some trees as there’s not been any shows in this part of the world. A few members of the Facebook group travelled to come visit so next year we’re hoping for more people to participate as there’s only so many trees one car can fit.

This dwarf EWP drops needles like crazy in Spring.
Last Spring it dropped at least 80% of its needles, but it backbuds pretty good. 🤷‍♂️
So I spent part of today doing a Fall task.

Phew. It looked like it wasnt going to make it last time you posted it.

Tax: Naturally had to get mothers' day gifts. While at nursery did not only look for mama. Found some nice shishishigira that appeared to be on own root stock.

Also noticed small nana labelled as bonsai $50

The big ones in nursery pots are only $30!!

Will be going and grabbing one of them probably to style for fun!! If I have a good work week maybe one of the shishi's will come home with me.

I’m very interested to see how this develops. Please, keep updating.

I threw a Staghorn Sumac root sprout in a pot of pumice three seasons ago. Every Spring I say, “If it’s still alive, I should try to do something with this.”
