What did you do today? Show us Pic Required

Spending the last TWO days trying to figure out what busted limbs on a quince and a maple.

We don't have deer!

Also there's no damn "leavings" of busted stuff.

No pix as I'm still looking.

Will post pix of the dead critter .....IF... I find it.

Another beautiful day as docent at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens I had 119 visitors today and a few of them were so taken by what they saw that they were ready to jump into the deep end today!

I also spent an hour removing dead blooms from this 40 year old azalea.

Did a double shift today at Lynden.

My curator was so happy I picked up this double shift that she assigned me my favorite tree to work on. This is the before photo unfortunately I had some groups come in right when I was closing so I forgot to take an after photo.

This is our showstopper when you first walk in.

Also cut spent flowers/seed pods off my azaleas.
Not done yet, the chinzan and my little satsuki still have a few days before the flowers are done.
Some of the azalea that bloomed earlier are putting on more foliage now and looking healthy.

More experimenting with moss coverings. Collected moss, rough chopped it with the plastic scraper used to collect, hydrated sphagnum moss, chopped it with scissors, mixed those roughly 50/50, added a layer to topsoil and proceed to play the piano like a two-year-old (with much repetition and more force than expected) to ensure good matting and overall contact.

The last time around, I wasn't as effective at chopping the sphagnum and it's a bit unsightly. For roughly the same overall effort, the scissors were a huge improvement.

This monstrosity of an Ilex crenata reminds me a bit of Jabba the Hutt crossed with the Tiny Attorney from The Venture Bros.

Like the tree thread, a pic required w/each post. Just for fun.
I thought it would be a fun thread for everyone to post what the did today regarding their Bonsai collection, along the lines of the tree thread where a pic is required or it didn't happen w/your post. Before and after even better but not required.
Show us what you did with your bonsai today.
I reduced some leaves and shoots on my ginkgos.

I began the restyle of my Kingsville boxwood penjing. Spent almost 3 hours just on the main tree, and barely got through half the tree! These things are remarkably dense and provide so many options. Some before shots.

I discussed this tree with my mentor, and we agreed that this tree had reached the peak of its current design, and that it was time to push it forward to a new iteration. I’m not planning any drastic changes to the trees themselves, but there are many branches that in strong competition with others and I think it can be simplified and improved. On this main tree, I would like to add more directional insinuation in harmony with the strong roots, to give the tree more of a feel of reaching out over a river.

After some pruning, cleaning up new shoots, and a few pieces of wire. Note that the right third of the tree, as well as the crown, is untouched!

The next phase of the redesign will be transplanting the group to a suiban to make a shuǐhàn penjing, a la Zhao Qingquan.

I see that you're the one that ended up getting it. I bet on that one for awhile xD

Glad to see that it is in your hands so that I can watch it progress.

Picture tax: My squat Baobab that I chopped on the 30th due to my unhappiness with how long the internodes got from my expirement during winter. It has since backbudded and the chopped top is leafing out in a baggie filled with water.DSC_1160.JPGDSC_1163.JPG
