Set up an air layer on one of my ginkgos, and a ground layer on one of my vine maples. Last two photos are from two years ago- I think it’ll make a really interesting clump/exposed root style if the layer takes successfully.

I got some practice yesterday with some collection-adjacent experience. I once again found a free dug up specimen on the interwebs (they're everywhere if you're looking!) and decided to get some hands on time with low input and low stakes material. I'm starting to build my first boxes and trip on my shoelaces in various places I was otherwise unaware of.

This free find is a rhododendron of unknown specifics. I was told it will bear white flowers and that's about all I know about it. The (assumed) homeowner pulled it from the ground and trimmed it back to what you see pictured.

I did some pretty massive sawing off of the base of the rootball. More than I wanted to, at first. I reminded myself not to baby step, especially with something that's of more value in knowledge and experience gained versus a gorgeously designed showpiece. I'm pleased with the result! Hopefully it bounces back and I'm able to encourage some healthy growth.

I'm thinking there's a growing need for added effort in my mid/long term aftercare aspects to really maximize value in these freebies. No matter what, though, I've learned a massive amount through getting my hands dirty.

Stopped at a local farm store and bought a neglected half (ok, maybe two thirds...) dead looking loropetalum (least I think 😂 it's a loropetalum, plant id agreed at least...). Farm store guy wasn't quite sure he'd had them kicking around for so long, definitely had no clue any more on the cultivar. He sold it to me for 25 bucks, which assuming it lives I think I did alright with. I cut back the long twiggy totally dead stuff along with some bits that were dead but for a leaf or two. Soil/roots don't seem overly tight and water perced as one would expect. So I left it at that and put it in a spot that will get a few hours of direct sunlight daily. So for now only plans are to let it sit and be nursed back to health.

I also got this little seedling from him. He didn't know variety. Any thoughts other than...yep, that's a japanese maple?

I picked up a Corkbark JBP earlier in the year, it had been repotted. Well, there are some very small buds and very short needles I'm guessing from a stalled second flush last year:

So, anticipating the worst, I grafted three shoots onto some vigorous standard JBP. Hopefully I can try getting them on their own roots in a year or two.

Then I checked on my air-layers, the Kojo No Mai gave me some welcome news, rooting out of the bag!

Scraped some moss from the driveway asphalt to mix with sphagnum as a topdressing. I ran it all through a 1/2" metal screen to mix and break up. I'd imagine it's pretty close to a 1:1 mix, but may be slightly heavier on sphagnum. This is my first venture into this style of topdressing and I'm quite excited!

I'm a bit curious to see if I run into issue with contamination, for lack of better wording. Between the neighbor washing his car religiously, the road grime, and any added fluid drips or spills, it seems like a risk to collect from such a location. I did collect from a spot that is pedestrian in nature (walkway between cars), assuming that they'd have the least likelihood for severe contamination or issues.

For such little effort, that's likely to yield high ROI, I'll be venturing past the driveway next time.
