Pinched the larch. I need to decide what I want to do with this one and get at it.

This a Juniper I ended up getting for free when it shipped damaged and they refunded me. The top had two cool branches that broke off in shipping & it ruined the look for me. Forgot to take a before picture, but it got trimmed today. Hard to get a good picture of this one.

Getting kind of side heavy too.

Then I rewired this Lemon Cypress grows straight up if you don't, plus I need practice wiring when the foliage is on, I had some pines giving me fits earlier this year.

Now it's dinner and drinks time while I smell like sap, juniper, & lemon. :)

Busy day!
I cut back all the happy new growth on the Japanese Larch I bought 2 weeks ago at the Potomac Bonsai Festival at the Arboretum. It's loving the pumice & coc coir.
Partially defoliated 2 yamadori dogwoods in an effort to get smaller internodes and leaves. These were both collected last year.
Partially defoliated the yamadori red maple that I collected last March.
Sprinkled a bit of NPK in every pot, and rationed out all the latest fert baskets I bought after packing them with BioGold.
Cut back the new shoots on my native persimmon.
Did a Walter Pall hedge shear on the American hornbeams that I'm fusing the trunks.
And cut the candles on the 2 Table Mountain pines (Pinus pungens) which no one seems to know much about. Time will tell if this was the right call, but the growth this spring has been vigorous.
These were collected high in the mountains near Sperryville, Virginia, last March.

Almost done with the bench setup!
Next is automatic sprinkler system, peebles layed on the ground and a polytunnel for the azalea!
My garden is nothing... I start to realize how much work some folks here have out in their benchs setup!

Checked in on some grapevine cuttings I stuck in a planter in early March. The viticulturist in me thinks grapevine could use more love. I’ll try pulling one or two out tomorrow and hopefully I find roots!

A little gingko decided to squat in the middle.. Gives me motivation to make more next spring.

Been a hot minute since I made a post, although I've been a little busy.

Last weekend, I took a class taught by John Eads. Very insightful and thought provoking. I signed up to continue with his classes.

Today, I was cleaning up the garage as I let it turn into a mess. As per usual, while cleaning it up (so that I can take pictures of some of my trees before working on them) I got distracted with a piece of wood I saved from a root chop of a zelkova. I had in mind of making it into maybe a tiny stand for a tiny tree. After letting it dry for a few months, it wrapped a lot more then I expected it to. Playing with it using a samurai tool bit, I carved the soft long dead stuff to reveal an interesting shape. It almost looks like a volcano top. I torched the inside to smooth out my lines and gave it a good brushing. A bit more work is in store, but I think I can make it into cool accent piece.

There's a woodworking thread in the tea house. I know I would like to see more pics of the process if you have any, or at least a "before" pic.

Went to Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and admired some bonsai trees and non-bonsai trees!

Mesmerized by the glaze on this Chinese Elm pot that brought out the blues and oranges of the trunk so well.

Fell in love with the bark on this witchy looking Satsuki tree.

Got a sunburn from standing around in the greenhouses too long.
Had a margarita.

Rigging up a plug for the basement window to be able to use a kiln exhaust fan when I need it while it's raining outside.

Made another crackle pot early in the morning to get my clay fix.

Bought some cinderblocks and 2x8s to put my new trees in training on a bench. I’m on a narrow balcony so space is very limited.
I yakisugi’d the 2x8s and sealed with oil. May try and paint the cinderblocks to match the wall next..

I’m pretty happy with the look though!
