Nonsense Rascal
I blame the green balls of death, even if it didn't cause it, I have a well seated hatred of them green balls of death and it feels good!

I removed more and there was basically a lump of grey slime that basically goes to the base of the tree. I should remove all the slimy stuff yes? I think it's impossible because I'm finding new slimy stuff everywhere.Well there's always a chance... Treat it like a large cutting and keep it humid and out of direct sun. It is critical that you don't let it dry out. You want the soil to remain moist but NOT wet - you just want it to stay moist enough that roots can grow and not dry out. Keep your fingers crossed and you might see new buds in a month or so...
Think it's done man, it's slimy all the way to the base of the plant. There was no soil in that pot and it should've been repotted out of a bonsai pot right when I got it but I was brand new (2nd plant).Well there's always a chance... I know this may be a controversial response for some but... ...stop using DE. Go to OC Farm Supply and pick up a 40 lb bag of pumice for $15. You will leave your "soil disappearing" problems behind.how do I avoid this just repot every 8 months or so and #2 when it's root bound like this what do u guys usually do in regards to cutting away at roots/how much do u leave behind, it's like the tree ate all the DE.
The other guy recommended them, I Googled some and it says 45-90 dollars for cases? When u buy is it bulk? This is why I advocate at least some time in an airpruning container.
Roots that can't circle can't ruin a design and therefore never really need to be drastically cut.
When you use a basket equal to the size of the future pot, 100% of the rootmass can be kept.
Baskets allow us the ultimate control.

That's basically what I do now, poke holes except always on the bottom. Ever since u recommended pond baskets it's all I see now in every video I watch. I use a hot screw driver and poke through. I looked up some of these baskets and they're expensive, are they only bought in bulk? I'm really interested because it looks like I have to re-pot everything. Also lol a $15 dollar bag that's 40 lbs, is this online? Could I just use 100% Pumice? Know anywhere to buy cheap prebonsai trees? Looking to replace my Chinese elm and maple, used to use wigerts but they're out of stock ATM. I checked out OC farm supply, do they deliver? I'm in NYC and don't see where to buy it anywhere.I know this may be a controversial response for some but... ...stop using DE. Go to OC Farm Supply and pick up a 40 lb bag of pumice for $15. Then, break out your oldest soldering iron, and poke that soup container full of small holes. I truly grow all of my small trees in pond baskets. Then say goodbye to root rot, and root encircling the interior of your pot problems.

Sorry... for a moment I confused you with another member who lived in LAI'm in NYC and don't see where to buy it anywhere.
Which is why this Rocky mountain soil is offering free shipping for half cubic foot which I'm assuming is 20 lbs?Sorry... for a moment I confused you with another member who lived in LAPumice is widely available on the west coast, and is more difficult to get here in the east.
Check out Build a Soil... they seem to have good options for pumice. When you ship pumice somewhere, you are really buying shipping and getting the pumice for free![]()
When u buy is it bulk?
Holy shite you're a genius dude. To think I was gonna leave a screwdriver on the stove and manually poke thousands of holes. And unprocessed!
Those Pot Materials!
Tired of going downstairs to pick up trees that test gravity in the wind, and understanding the benefits of colanders, I decided to solve a couple problems. Crappy pots, and crappy broken pots! One 4in clay completely destroyed, in a sock holding it together. Ham containers, small nursery...www.bonsainut.com

Hypothetically instead of making the bottom concrete could I ziptie the bottom with the same material? And unprocessed!

@sorce @Bonsai Nut can u guys help me out and tell me what I'm looking at besides the obvious? Making my own pond baskets and when re-pottiing I never know exactly how much to take off of the roots. This is a year old dawn redwood.Or staple it to wood. Etcetc.
The material is all you need everything else you have for sure. No matter what it is!

Yeah I'm looking at buying some but convenient this way. This way will suffice right? There's basically screwdriver sized holes a cm apart all around top to bottom. In the winter I'm assuming u have to protect more yes?No one would ever know Walter puts as much root into a pot as possible if he didn't say it.
That's been enough for me to follow suit.
The added benefit of the basket is that any unsightly or near runaround or even stuff you have to wrap around yourself can only get so bad, which IMO, in an appropriate airpruning basket (not a Betty Crocker colander), is never bad enough to hamper health or design.
It's impossible for roots to do anything negative in a basket.
So I reckon what you're looking at is 100% growth and development power. Anything cut off is just less of the same.

I would do that in a heart beat if I don't live 2 time zones away.I know this may be a controversial response for some but... ...stop using DE. Go to OC Farm Supply and pick up a 40 lb bag of pumice for $15. You will leave your "soil disappearing" problems behind.
You'd do straight Pumice? I've had great results with DE so far and it's cheaper. There are places u can get 40lbs for cheap it's just shipping.I would do that in a heart beat if I don't live 2 time zones away.
