The Barber's Hinoki Cypress (chamaecyparis obtusa) "Split Rock" #1

Thanks for feedback. Was just watching a wedge cut video but on a pine and also watched a video of a pine with large bend with raffia or actually hemp and rebar to pull and guy wire. Glad you mentioned pines easier to bend as have not done anything with pine to have frame of reference

One more question for you @The Barber did you do similar things with your second one or just let it grow? I am wondering about best way to check trunk below soil line before repotting? I was thinking initial styling in September but that might not be great if I don’t know how far down base goes in nursery pot. And afraid to disturb roots to see base below soil

Like any tree, you can dig till you find roots and it won't cause any problems. The split rock hinoki I have that is still alive I have left unstyled, it is currently about 6 or 7 ft tall, with maybe a 4 or 5 inch base I would say. I may style it in the spring. I prefer to do it at a time like early spring right before the sap starts to move, before the growing season, allowing the most time to heal possible before dormant seasons.
