Sekka Hinoki trouble

Kept this full, a Spring task requires about an hour of work on each Sekka to remove die off shedding. This for me typically involves foliage both near or at terminals, as well as mid branch, usually with interior growth deeper in.
With the foliage dry, the brown crumbles away easily, but frawns or these thin branched tufts of foliage also peel away damaged at bifurcations, so care must be taken when massaging these areas.
After an initial clean up I took pics with another camera, not this phone cam. My wife has that pc tied up looking for Colorado train rides, so cant follow through with an after initial cleanup. It will be thinned more this year later in Summer. For now its just coming out of Winter dormancy.

I haven't done any thinning, but will be making more strides in pad formation this year
though I feel these 2 Sekka I have don't lend themselves so much to typical conifer styling designs.
It could just me me, and having these such a short time, and I need to get in there on a more micro management regime.

So this little guy lives, but neither Sekka handle Winter in my care with vigour.
I've felt like this one has struggled since i squeezed it in this small oval. I'm going to up pot it soon to increase oxygen
and begin shifting to Tiny Roots conifer blend.
I've already crumbled a bunch of dried up dead foliage in the top as i do each Spring.

I feel like they like deep pots with a lot of drainage. Mine seems to do ok in the greenhouse in the winter and lot of shade in the 90s and 100s. I think the bigger pot will do it some good.

I have about 10 saplings that I wintered outside this winter and they too have a lot more freeze damage than my standard obtusa, but they are pushing a lot of new growth. I plan to give them a bit more protection next winter. Unfortunately not a lot of care data for them.

I’m not so sure it is Winter protection.
All my trees go under my sunroom on the N side of the house in December
No direct Sun, no snow, no frost. Only water.
is there any chance yours could use more water? It is possible on my end.
Perhaps next year I will heel one into the ground exposed to snow and frost, IDK.
You‘re in a better situation to try this than I, having several.
I only have 2 in clay pots + 1 cutting that survived Winter stuck in a nursery can
with a fir tree I believe.

Wrestled with waiting till May and putting into a nice little, but bigger oval pot.
Decided to save the money and use this new mica pot that feels a good fit for breathing. In the 6th pic i put the root system back in the pot after working them down nearly half maybe 1/3, and it would still be crammed in. inView attachment 481313
