Hinoki Sekka

Ok couldn’t tell from last picture. As others have mentioned only wait and water as needed. No signs of bugs (mites)? Have read where people take a white sheet of paper and tap tree to see if small red bugs fall off that are hard to see with human eye. Only skimmed top so not sure if this was mentioned or not. Never had one of those although wouldn’t mind finding one

Should I cut the lower branches off so that way the energy is focused on what is still green

Pretty confident the wiring is the sole cause, not the trip out of town.
Hinoki has been the most pouty tree type I've wired incl sekka, especially sekka.
Nonetheless, I am done with sekka. They do not last more than a few short years in my care/location.
On the other hand, they strike readily from cuttings for me. 🤷‍♂️
Primo arborvitae is a good similar replacement.

Thank you. I’ve understood Guy wire was the way to go. What stings the most is that I took this tree to a workshop and this is what came of it. I like Sekka because it already kind of looks like a tree.

Sekka is not a good "tree" to learn wiring on.
No hinoki is.

I had a similar situation, although less severe - all the branches started showing dead foliage.
The first year of it, I removed dead foliage, and branches, to try and open up the tree in hopes of more growth. The tree stayed basically the same for the rest of the year, and during the next year.
The year after I moved it in to substantial shade, and the tree was happier. No dead foliage, but minimal growth.
This year I placed the tree half in shade and half in sun (~6-7 hours of direct sun, morning until mid afternoon). I also got a few seedlings and placed 2 in full shade and 1 in the 6-7hrs sun. But, I really watered them all this year - constantly damp/wet, along with daily misting of the foliage, versus watering only when the top ~1” of soil was dry.
All of the trees are much, much happier-however, I see the tree (and half tree) in the sun have noticeably more growth.

Good luck with your tree.

Can confirm sekka like afternoon shade. I keep these on my maple bench at the edge of the shade cloth.
Second photo caught one in the background this spring after it was cut back initially.

I think it’s biting the dust. Good lesson in being a tree killer.

soaking in water will not do anything. Just make sure you water the pot well. You could water three times fully dousing the pot in 10 minutes intervals. Then do now water again untill it starts to dry op. Put in dapples shade and wait to see whether the tree re-roots. You COULD consider putting it in a plastic bag, but that causes equal amounts of challenges as solutions. (If it is really dry and windy it might help. If in a bag, do not keep it in the sun unless you like your bonsai stewed.
If you are not familiar with the soaking method i recommend reading about it. It is the only method that thoroughly soaks the root ball, as sometimes normal watering cannot penetrate the compacted soil/ overgrown roots to reach the inner part of the ball.

From 30 minutes to 7-8 hours, depending on the situation and species. A lot of reputable bonsai enthusiasts use it as a revival method- Milton Chang from bonsai heirloom YT, Colin Lewis in 'Bonsai Survival Manual', Randy Knight, and many more.
Some go even further and add vitamin B1.

However, this tree is dead now, likely from a combination of wiring and desiccation.

lol, you lost me when you used Bonsai Heirloom as your source of wisdom.

Soaking as a general watering methid is just not good.

If you have substrate that is really dry, water with lukewarm water. Problem solved.

Its not a good look to talk bad about mr Milton Chang and his YT channel, especially when you dont have even half his subs or viewership. I am sorry but i thought you were above that.
I understand soaking is not to your liking, lets leave it there- but it IS a useful method, according to reputable bonsai hobbyists.

Not sure why you feel you need to attack me but hey..

lets say I do not do youtube for viewers or subs (and I do not buy them either). I do it to try and get solid information out. Another thing that I differ in.

Glad that I do not derive my information from hobbists but from people who have had bonsai as their main source of living for 5+ decades.

So only people who make a living from bonsai have decent information?

Then by your own standards you shouldnt be talking about bonsai at all.

Look at your posts in this topic and derive some information from that.

Is it the trash talking you did?
Is it the ironic speech?
Or is it the double standards?

Go make a youtube video about it and let us know.

Genuinely, go kick rocks. Where do you get off going after some of our most respected members like that?

If you pulled your head out of your ass you might know that the guy behind bonsai heirloom is a hack who pays for views. Jelle is the real deal.

Don't bother responding, you're getting blocked.
