Rudd’s Pseudo-Apprenticeship at Bonsai Jidai

I wired up this California that had been previously worked during an advanced class a couple years ago. At that time the live vein was split from the deadwood, then further split in half, with one half becoming the apex and the other bent 180° to be the whole lower section.

I styled it with what I had, but in the future I’d like to see the apex move to the right a bit, nd grow out a branch to drop down and to the right as well.

Nice job!

Tree foliage looks a bit yellow right now. It’s that’s due to the lighting?

Cheers

Very tight and green foliage for a Cali juniper! Almost looks like a grafted tree, but I'm happy it's not.

Great read on a great learning experience! Not to mention some really nice trees...

Finally, a quick one day juniper. Styled this tree belonging to a customer today.

Great first style! It must be a treat to work on so many great trees. The trunk feels very horizontal at this angle though. I'm curious if you guys discussed an angle change, maybe 30 degrees to the left so the trunk is not flat?

We didn’t discuss it, but this tree could easily have been worked into a cascade or a more upright version if the client chose.

Repotting season is here. Today we knocked out a few of the small trees, the large ones will have to wait until we get more soil components shipped in from Japan in a few weeks.

I repotted the Ben Oki Juniper first, Sensei Nguy said it hadn't been repotted in about 10 years. The soil was like a brick. It got a larger pot this time around.

Then a couple of Silverberries.

An Oak.

A Procumbens Nana. This one was Sensei Nguy’s first bonsai tree, the foliage is almost 100% mature scale foliage. We repotted it last year, but we wanted to change the pot and increase the lean to the right.

And a JBP. We also did this one last year, but there was an opportunity to improve the nebari, so it got repotted again.

I need to find someone who will take me on to help with some repots…seems like the kinda thing where you could always use an extra hand, and I don’t have nearly enough experience working on my own collection.

That oak is incredible!

What's your climate like the rest of winter? Any risk of freezing temps? What sort of aftercare will these trees get, if any?

I'm curious because we usually get frost into May over here, so I don't plan to do any repotting for a couple more months at least.
