Rudd’s Pseudo-Apprenticeship at Bonsai Jidai

Wow! Your skills have really come a long way in a short amount of time. Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

What a cool event that must have been. Educational, and entertaining with the added fear from the possibility of breaking the vein and ruining a beautiful, old tree.

This thing looks MASSIVE. How big is it / do you have any pics of it that better show the scale?

The pot is 2’ across. It’s big, but not as big as most of his trees. I think I’m going to start working a raw yamadori next week that is easily double the size.

Chino Club worked the deadwood on this raw yamadori last weekend, and then Sensei Nguy did a first styling. We repotted it today, that was an ordeal.

And some more trees we repotted today.

I love the new angle on that JBP, big improvement imo, looks better in person. I have some more pictures from the deadwood work on the big California:

And thanks for the help with my tree:

Always great to see updates on your apprenticeship!

PS: Thank you very much for helping me load the cork oak the other weekend. It arrived safely!

Oh, hey brother, glad to hear. Can’t wait to see what you do with that California, too.

Started on a new tree today. Just cleaned the live vein and started on wiring the first left branch. Back at it again tomorrow.

Sunday a few guys from the club are coming to work on this massive yamadori. We need to split it into maybe two or three trees, and probably do massive bends on the live veins and roots to fit it into a smaller container. We’ll see what we find under the soil.

Well, we got one of the trunks separated from that massive California Juniper. It took several hours and didnt go exactly as planned.

Cutting the split.

Using a bottle jack to start tearing the trunk away.

Separated.

We decided not to bend the roots on the remaining tree, maybe in the future. We just potted it up instead.

During breaks I did a little more wiring on the other tree.

Container removed, roots combed out, starting the split:

It took a lot of effort to split the live vein down the length of the tree. We used jacks, blocks, chisels, pick axes, and whatever this pole is, to slowly work the wood apart:
