The first of many shohin JBP to work through over the next 6 weeks or so. This one got new shoes, a Nick Lenz oval.

The trunk, nebari & the bark are amazing. How old is this one? I'm assuming you know because you grew it from seed in college. ;)

Actually, I got these 2 back in early 2018 at the BIB show auction in CA… both trees cost less than $250 iirc😬🤷🏼‍♂️😎, and were probably no more than 10-15 years old at that time.

I was told there would be no math. :) So... either 17 or 22 years old. (puts shoes back on) Either way love those Shohin pines.

One growing season in most of CA is equivalent to two here in Se MI, more or less… oops, more math😬

The last BIB show and auction I attended and took part in was 2017, I missed those two in 2018 for sure. Lets see if I am guessing correctly, they were part of Jonas's developed material.! Adair grabbed the one I was hoping to get in 2017.I helped Jonas unload and fell in love with it. Only to find out it was already spoken for. If I recall correctly there were several for sale that year but Adair snagged the best one.

I was never told these were from Jonas but it would make sense. He was vending at that show an I bought yet another shohin JBP from him then.

This may be the last time this particular tree appears in this thread... as I don't think it's a project anymore 🤷‍♂️ :p .

It looked like this just over 2 years ago...

This is what it looked like after it was re-potted in late April, 2024

This is what it looks like today after getting squeezed into this vintage yamaaki rustic... had to bare root about a 3rd of the root ball where the finer roots are up on the left front.

I like the pot choice! All those embellishments and the texture of the clay work well with the roots.

This one could be fun if it doesn’t die… rabbit chomped chojubai planted on a stone… first time making/using homemade muck with clay sourced from my backyard 😬. The stone bottom is touching the bottom of the pot and exposed roots May be a thing here too🤷🏼‍♂️

This one got a new not so traditional pot by Ryugaku- fwiw, I love his pots and own a few. The soil was a brick... apparently oxalis and mycorrhiza don't care.

Anyway, I have another shohin JBP that needed a more formal pot, hence the pot change. Let me know what you think.

I like it, partially because it's not traditional, because you can't throw a rock without hitting a JBP in the former pot. It's also a sweet pot that compliments the branches and doesn't distract from the tree.

How long between repotting on that brick soil Shohni JBP?

I shoot for every three years on rep-pots of smaller pines like this. With that being said, my record keeping sucks😬. I’m guessing I did it three years ago.🤷🏼‍♂️. For what it’s worth, a lot of the brick was soil from the original grower, before I acquired it like six or seven years ago. It was time to refresh the soil for sure.
