Projects

These two really want to go out on the bench... just not today!

I've decided the bigger one will stay on the board until it either rots away or the tree spits out the screw. Also, still working on filling in the left side of the canopy. This one will get pinched for the second year but I'll let one shoot extend and hopefully be able to graft something later this summer.

Maples look great . How are the exposed root pines doing . From start of thread . Looking for advice on . Root over rock pine . Did one in the past using Scot’s pine seedling . Just looking for better ideas . Visa visa . Growing roots longer for this style and or planting with a rock . When I last did it . Planted tree secured to rock with rafia . Buried the wholething in a big pot . Found the constant repotting needed to keep roots going the way I wanted . The biggest set back to growth . Looking for a better way . Any help appreciated . Can start another thread if you don’t want this here . Just hopping to learn from what you have going

The exposed root pines are doing fine and I'll be trying to created exposed root Scots pines in the future. I've performed loads of root over rock trident maples but only a few root over rock pines, carried out identically to the tridents, but only had them for a short while so not much help. I suspect the reason you see 10 ROR maples to 1 ROR pine or juniper speaks to what you mentioned speaks to the difficulty and time required to get it done. Fwiw, starting a thread of your own is never a bad idea and much more likely to get you meaningful advice.

Sorry was not trying to highjack your thread was mainly curious about the exposed root . Pines thinking your experience . May be useful for elongating roots . Thinking that should be my first step next time . Ror

Growing out the seedlings-tridents for me- in long narrow containers absolutely helped grow the long roots needed for wrapping around the rock... I tend to build smaller trees when working with seedlings so I used soda bottles or water bottles with the tops and bottoms removed. I also use these for my exposed root projects.

That’s what I was thinking . Have a bunch of old plastic pipe . Do you use bonsai soil in the tube section . Was thinking maybe pest based soil in the tube over . Box of bonsai soil may promote long straight roots .

Peat based soil
I don't use peat based soil for anything bonsai related excluding some Kusamono. For ROR projects, I'll use a typical aggregate mix. I usually use a turface/bark mix, again, because I'm working with maples and they seem to grow well in it.

I don’t use peat also . Was just spit balling trying to think what will encourage the roots to grow straight down the tube . To the bonsai soil

@Frozentreehugger , the ibigawa stone was a pick up on facebook auctions years ago. They're imported, hard to find and expensive, so I grabbed this one and another one just like it when I had the opportunity.
Thanks sort of what I was thinking . I like the big cascade juniper . Is it collected . I assume looks like you are grafting . Are you trying to change the foliage or just grafting closer to trunk

The RMJ from the beginning of this thread? I was grafting to improve the foliage... it was dead by mid summer... overworked and not properly secured in the pot.

That’s to bad . Looked nice . Only wild juniper around here . Is common needle juniper . I like them . But for such a cold hardy drought tolerant hard to kill tree in the wild . They are incredibly hard to make thrive in captivity . Lots of theories . Root sensitive even established wild trees up and die for no reason after repot . That and eastern red cedar . Virginia juniper

We’re going to see how ume like southern Michigan. That’s‘kobai’
