Progressive maple #2- Dave Murphy

Per second picture in post #2, there's a lot of vertical growth. I don't think I've seen that before on this cultivar. Perhaps it's a bit tilted? Still, there's a lot of upward growth.
Without knowing the answer definitively, I few things come to mind. First, this is a 'Murusaki Kiohime' as opposed to just 'kiohime'. They're both dwarf and less apically dominant then the species, but maybe this one has a more vertical habit? The other thing is that this one was over 6' wide when I dug it...it lost maybe 12-15" of height and over 4' of width when it was cut back. The new growth from last year is more lateral then vertical, too.

That is a lot of progress in a short time.

Awesome one, I LOVE japanese maples!
Thanks Joe. Even I was surprised at the vigor this one showed after being collected, and I decided to go ahead with the ground layer last year instead of waiting a year...which would have been safer and may have yielded better results:D. Hopefully, the good start to the nebari will continue...we shall see next year.

nice work dave. Thats one heck of a base you are developing, should really make a nice spread with what you have done.
I'm envious you get to do some repots now, I have two feet of snow outside!

Hehe, ideally, I probably should have waited another month...we can get frosts and freezes here into March. This one will be spending the next 6 weeks or so moving in and out of my garage, I'd guesso_O.

in and out keeps wiggling the roots. Might be better options? great start on this one!! For the first one, i would wait a year to perform a ground layer?

In and out is relative. It's going to sit in the garage until it starts pushing leaves, probably in the next 3 to 4 weeks. Then it will stay outside as long as the temps are not too cold, so most of the time. The tree is attached to the board which is wired to the flat, so it shouldn't wiggle much.

By the way, this is "the first one"...:)

Good work.

Once you get it strong again, it will be time to remove those two heavy branches. Then start new branches with thread grafts

I'm thinking about styling this one like one of W. Pall's rugged informal broom collected trees, so I'm not going to cut everything back to the trunk. As usual, everything is prone to change, so who knows. As you say, this is a recovery year...lot's of sun, feed, and water.

Ah. That's different then.

I saw how ramified it had gotten all on its own, and assumed you would do one of those.

The Walter Pall "fairy tale oaks" would be better suited to the species of trees that don't ramify as well as this tree does, at least that's my take. But I'm sure you have a plan, so I'll step back and watch it happen!

Adair, do you have an example as I'm not quite sure what you're referring to? My decision to go the route of a WP fairy tale tree is purely based on the knobbly base, abundant scarring, and the heavy, spreading branches...as opposed to a pine tree styled maple? Maybe you've got a better idea, so...

Next couple of years will see some good nebari starting. Looks like it's got them in the right place now

I am gettin my test of patience watching all you southerners repotting! Another one with a great future, well done.
Oh ya, and Georgia beat Toronto in the NLL last night!
I'll tell you, the cold December and January we had followed by a very warm February had everything breaking dormancy. Within the last 2 weeks last month, things went from just beginning to stir to full on spring growth... I have Japanese maples in the ground with 4 inch shoots on them and potted JBP with 6 inch candles. Usually, I can spread the re-potting season out over about 2 months, from late January through March, but not this year. I re-potted a bunch of JBP seedling projects this past week and still have a few more maples to do... and then there's the rest of the conifers... and the weatherman just said that the coldest air in over a month is headed our way from your neck of the woods....

Go Georgia Swarm!!!!

I’m thinking you could have cut back that root ball a bit more, but good job nonetheless!

Rereading this thread had me thinking...

You have really expanded your skill set over the past couple years. I’m really happy to see it! And think I might have had a bit of influence on that progression.

I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy Redneck weekend! Ken is coming in Friday. You’re welcome to come and stay at my house Friday as well, I have a spare sofa. Bring your own pillow!

We’ll raid the wine cellar!

Looking forward to see what you’ve stashed downstairs in the basement?... And those roots were cut back hard after the pictures were taken… Nothing hanging over the board :-).

Fair warning, exploring the depths of my basement would give Indiana Jones a decent challenge!

No snakes, though!

Huge rolling balls of granite? Quite possibly!
