Progressive Maple Challenge - Max II

how do you get the seedlings gain girth to look similar to the other roots? These will be very thin compared to the other.

You let them grow!!!
But how?Does this have to be done in a larger container? Maybe, when I repot I don't cut them? Do I have to use very large donors?

edit: duh! I get it! Let the seedling grow a lot hahahah

...and she tells the locksmith...."please get here quick, it's starting to rain and I left the top down!"

Yes but... do not let them thicken up too much as it will become harder to strike a successful and good looking root graft. I usually use two to three year old seedlings. When repotting I also don't cut back that root.

I will see what I have available...

I like the tree, I like your proposed front. Knuckle has to delt with and I think your other plans are the way to go. Good looking tree. Enjoy your winter, this is about our 9th straight day over 100 and it is getting old.

Lost in translation... ¿?

Thanks! It is 17°C or 65°F here... autumn hasn't really arrived yet! LOL

It was a bad luck day for that gal. She was on the escalator at the mall, and the escalator broke down. She was stuck on it for three hours. Then finally gets out to her convertible and realized she locked her keys in it and left the top down.

Which top did she leave down?

how late is late for repotting these??
I get my pot on tuesday, and some buds still seem to be in winter, while a bunch of leaves are beggining to unroll...
How far ahead can I risk?

This is what I'm reading: https://nebaribonsai.wordpress.com/category/deciduous/japanese-maple/page/2/

"This is why it’s important to conduct repotting and pruning just after the energy stores in the roots are squeezed up into the shoots and the tree is beginning to form leaves that can generate energy to strengthen the just-pruned roots. All the while, we must be careful to leave enough roots intact to supply the transpiring leaves with water. Got it? Good. Back to the maple."
Could you post a picture of the leaves popping out? I repotted mine in spring with buds mostly unfurling, which sounds like I'm doing it right. My maples are fine.

It sounds a lot easier than it is... They don't open all at the same time.
But I think I will be ok for next tuesday.

I re-potted last night, had like 10 unfurling leaves and swelling buds everywhere... I found some roots that would help fill out the nebari, I couldn't find the guts to graft roots on this tree.
I slept like shit last night thinking if it will make it! Probably will, but still had me sleeping uneasily all night and still am nervous now (do you old timers get that feeling or not anymore?). Temps this week rose to 8°C minimum (approx 47°F)and 22-28°C (72-82F).

The only bad thing I had to mound it up a bit, I couldn't go lower because of a hidden piece of trunk that will be addressed next year (I hope Adair doesn't get mad). I did it by myself so I played it safe.

I know... pics or it didn't happen. I will get something tonight most probably.
