Pigletts Progress

I hope you plan to make it less triangular/conical, the whole “maple made to look like a pine tree” thing. I would love to see a nice wide, rounded canopy on this beaut!
It doesn't look like a pine tree...
Pine tree look is horizontal/ downward branches.

Piglett looks like an amazing, very old deciduous tree.

It's great work, keep it up Judy!

I stand by my comment :). It’s an outstanding tree, but would look better with a natural rounded canopy. I’m sorry but maples are just not triangular. And it may be her plan and that this is simply what it takes to get there Idk.

Indeed that is the plan. It has a ways to go. I can't imagine anyone seeing this tree as being even close to pine tree styled, even as it is though...

lol. Me neither. Unless you only look at canopy outline. But yeah, creating a well developed crown with nicely tapered branches takes a decade. Or two. I think this is an amazing tree already, and will continue to get better for the decades to come, how you are working it. Great project & well done!

I agree...to get the best results are not rushing the finish line. Long untaperered branches to get to a desired shape...in the long run is a disservice to this amazing tree.

Glad to hear, I assumed as much! Maybe pine-tree-like wasn’t the right way to say it, I guess I don’t know how to explain what I mean. My apologies if I came off the wrong way..

A stupid question ---------- why is the refinement pot already the exhibition pot ?
Should the tree not be in a larger pot for those branches to develop the taper ?
Good Day

* It is a beautiful beginning by the way.

because it already is at a pretty good stage, plus I think judy is working hard to have everything in a good show state in the garden

This tree has plenty of room in the pot it's in believe me. I repot this tree every year, so there is little reason to put it in a larger pot or trainer. I like to envision my trees in the future state, and putting them in nice pots helps me to see where it is headed. And I do like to have a nice looking garden as Giga has said. I don't understand why people have such a thing about not putting trees in actual pots, as long as the space needed is provided. It's not as bad as it used to be, I used to get the beatdown all the time a number of years ago about putting trees in pots too soon. I have had lots of trees in prebonsai condition in trainers, but I find I don't have as much material in that state any more.

Hey its fine. I'm sure what you meant to talk about is the canopy silhouette, and that a mature maple sports a rounded canopy. Whereas a pine is more triangular. I think where you got off track is by not seeing that this is a tree with multiple sub-trunks and pine trees just don't grow that way at all.

Wow, is that real? That is cool!
Piggy is unfurling leaves so fast I can almost hear them...

Unfortunately no not real. Can’t wait to see yours in leaf. As impressive as many fine twigs are, I enjoy deciduous in leaf just as much.

If there wasn’t going to be such a hard freeze for the next few nights I could take some photos, but it’s too difficult to move stuff around when it’s all in there. Hopefully this is the last of the worst cold.

A little update on this little guy. Defoliated, reduced and wired. It's a time consuming thing, but the canopy is taking shape nice

May I request an Arial photo? I'm looking at "how to work but trunk cuts into the design". Sure looks like any dramatic cuts there are not blatant. Thanks for sharing the pics. ... So very much for me to learn.
