Paradox's Vance Wood memorial mugo contest entry

Nice one! Good branching

Yea I was really surprised, its rare to get an actual trunk.
This one looked like the most promising of the group
It doesnt seem to have more trunk buried in the pot either.
I found some roots when I dug around in the pot

Reduced the root ball and repotted today and cut some branches I knew weren't going to be in the final design.

Cleaned around the edge after cutting the botton half off.

Was happy to see that the tree has a ton of roots but not many huge ones that I could find.

I normally don't like repotting in summer which is one thing I differ from Vance about. I've done it successfully but I feel the trees respond better for me if repotted in spring.

We have a stretch of mind weather for the next week with daytime temperatures in the low 80s and night in the high 60s so I feel better about it's chance at recovery.

Will place this one in a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade for a few weeks then give it full sun.

Very nice. Looking good. I’m repotting my two Mugo pines today that I lightly pruned and wired yesterday and day before. I have medium sized net pot type containers with plentiful holes and will get my soil on my way home from work.

My first two pines! 😍😍

Nice find! (and nice initially work, looks like your direction is clear)

Fall 2024 update.
Wired the branches that will be in the final design. Pruned a few branches and marked others to be pruned later. Pruned back some branches to force energy back and hopefully promote back budding. Thinned needles.
Still pretty rough looking but pines are definitely a marathon.
