Just found another tree, it's a late entry but has so much potential that I think it will develop nicely in 3 years. The ramification is already here a bit.IMG_20250302_111723.jpgIMG_20250302_111711.jpg

I did tome work on it today as an experiment. Since it is a late entry I can pretty much make this an expendable tree:IMG_20250427_112230.jpgIMG_20250427_115929.jpg
I cut most of the shoots into the needles, so if it survives it should ramify well.

Looking healthy! Glad to see some updates

I've been trying to follow the steps laid out by Vance, and I don't believe this is the ideal time for a hard prune like that. Hopefully this proves to be successful! Excited to see future updates.

It's the one exception that confirms the rule I guess.

Is there a reason this happens or just lucky?
Looks like that branch was recently cut. It could have been a latent bud that came out before the tree realized the branch was technically dead.
Its part luck and part health and vigor of the tree

Interesting. Thanks for explaining that to me.

Don't count your chickens b4 they hatch.
Hope it matures, but it's a timing thing now.
The bud has to mature b4 the branch colapses.
Honestly, the rule to cutting back to a bud requires keeping enough foliage to sustain the branch, on that branch. That is not the case here.

Some buds are opening now, but these were already here in spring, so I wouldn't call that a second flush. I do also see some tiny needlebuds at some of the cut sites.IMG_20250524_151958.jpgIMG_20250524_154659.jpgIMG_20250524_154745.jpgIMG_20250524_152108.jpg

Textbook double flush response, except on mugo pine.

Edit: there are fascicles slowly formi g under some of the juvenile needles:

This kind of cutback seems to work well, the second flush is only juvenile but each of the juvenile needles has a bud under it.
Another tree pruned this year:

The shoot that grew from a bare branch actually survived:IMG_20250805_184629.jpg
