Michigan Tree Murderer
Masterpiece
Mature flat top. Just trying to get a good secondary branch taper.
I used to have a hard time too until I realized that, in order to get taper at the branches, I need to build them one segment at a time. As time goes on the segments get shorter and shorter. The tree is doing great! I would have a hard time cutting that much off, but it's not my vision...
If it were mine I would promote the small branch and wire it to be the major branch. It is already there at near perfect length and diameter proportion.Forgot to post this last week.
Top main branches are in place and I'm ready to start working on ramification of the secondary and tertiary branching. Took the wire off and cut a ring like CR said, then used a hand saw to cut, applied duct seal cut paste. I should've taken close up pics.

Wire bite and opinions are welcome. Left about four inches.

Looking at CajunRiders other threads I should probably cut the other branches back.
I did give that consideration before I chopped and I really like the idea. Instant taper is awesome. Hmmm I'll sleep on it.If it were mine I would promote the small branch and wire it to be the major branch. It is already there at near perfect length and diameter proportion.
Keep the stub and tape the small branch to it. No need to cut that away until later.I did give that consideration before I chopped and I really like the idea. Instant taper is awesome. Hmmm I'll sleep on it.![]()
Interesting. What's the reason for taping the branch to the stub? Like masking tape or duct tape?Keep the stub and tape the small branch to it. No need to cut that away until later.
No wiring needed to train the small branch to the angle of the big branch.Interesting. What's the reason for taping the branch to the stub? Like masking tape or duct tape?
Here's the branch tape, wire, zip tie, job. The tape didn't hold like I wanted so I tripled down,If it were mine I would promote the small branch and wire it to be the major branch. It is already there at near perfect length and diameter proportion.
Wait. Let the low branches grow big. I cut mine in anticipation of moving. I’d rather short branches than broken ones. Here's the branch tape, wire, zip tie, job. The tape didn't hold like I wanted so I tripled down,I should probably take the zip tie off.

I saw you trimming back a few of your BC branches. Should I cut the long branches back or wait?
