We had a 50’ dawn redwood up the street, but hurricane Helene took care of it along with thousands of oaks and whIte pines, etc.I love mine... We have a 40' Dawn Redwood down the street that does the same thing and it is beautiful!
It is super healthy and being developed beautifully!
I think they are. We’ll find out in a week or two.Spring Equinox is here next week. Weather is getting warmer but we'll probably get a late snow storm like normal. I checked the BC buds when I got home from work today. Are these the buds?

I looked for buds two weeks ago and didn't see much. My Larches & Dawn Redwood which wintered next to the BC have much bigger buds. Just trying to make sure it made it through the winter, if those aren't buds let me down easy.Urge to freak out is rising when I compare my conifers. Thanks buddies.
Scratch test? My BC's are usually the later ones to bud out. Mine in pots are just now starting to and one of my bigger one's is just now showing buds swelling. They're practically invisible before they start to swell, in my experience. We've been having temps steadily in the 70s the past 2 weeks, if that gives you any indication. The only other trees I have that wake up later are my oaks, junipers, and crepe myrtles.Spring Equinox is here next week. Well the suspense is killing me.I think they are. We’ll find out in a week or two.
Thanks that's what I wanted to hear. I suppose I could try the scratch test. Thanks.Scratch test? My BC's are usually the later ones to bud out. Mine are still in plastic bins with no holes (two years now)...Well the suspense is killing me.
I drilled holes on the side at the bottom to drain the pot during the winter. Can I try to seal them back up for letting the BC sit in water this season or should I just put this pot in a bigger water filled container? I doubt it needs repotting this year.
Can I wire now?

@Michigan Tree Murderer how is the big BC looking? survive the winter ok?
Should I wait a few weeks until the BC has fully needled out before I resume nicking the scar? Pic from today. Needle buds are popping out everywhere.Don’t nick the scar again until spring.
Nick it any time now. It should be growing fast soon.Should I wait a few weeks until the BC has fully needled out before I resume nicking the scar? Pic from today. Needle buds are popping out everywhere.![]()

Anyone have thoughts on this design I'm considering? Carving this left side down a half inch or less to give the appearance of a more storm damaged apex? I'm thinking It would break up the "clean break" look, and add some character.
