I just put this forest together and it’s starting to grow really well. The large tree has large branches on the lower part. Do I want to cut them back now to get the top to grow larger?

I'd keep the strong lower branches going and get rid of the weak ones on the big tree. You'll be fighting the apex in a month. Good start and good luck.

Keep everything for now so the roots get the energy to grow.
Do you see any buds near the top of the big tree? It is hard for me to tell from your picture. If there are no buds above the strong lower branches, the top part of the trunk of the big tree may be drying out. At this stage, there is not much you can do about it. Keep your fingers crossed and prepare yourself for the possibility of losing top part of the trunk and the strong low branch become the new apex.
If you do have good buds or branches near the top, you are lucky to have the low strong branch. You may want to bend it ever so slightly every day to massage that strong branch to horizontal position.

It dose have a lot of branches at the top about 4-5 coming directly from the top cut.
