It is a bit drastic option, and will take some time, but keep in mind that you could improve the tree and sell the airlayer too

For me it is the perfect combination between a tidy and natural ramification for an elm.

This tree has real presence and character, making it look old and crotchety like me. It is my kind of tree.
The pictures suggest the canopy is taking the energy from the lower branches. This is probably in part due to 2D pictures but beware and be sure its not happening. I'm sure you already know that elms tend to be apically dominant and lower branching can weaken.

Thanks Don. Yes keenly aware of it. Part of it is the photo. The challenge is that the upper branches needed thickening (some still do) and more development while keeping the lower ones alive and well. Now I am able to restrain that upper growth better than a I did a couple of seasons back. Last year I made some big cut backs over the apical region to open it up and balance its vigor throughout. It is always a challenge with most trees.

Just repotted with the help of my apprentice Sal (@Tidal Bonsai) in the new custom made pot that @NaoTK made for it. Took us about just under 1.5 hours, much faster than originally anticipated. Sharing a few shots of the procedure. We once again managed to do it without a single piece of bark damaged.

The huge pot was picked up by @William N. Valavanis and Mark Arpag at the PBE last year and brought back to the East Coast. Lat November I went up to Bill's place and picked it up. The quality of this pot is truly exceptional, not an easy feat at these sizes!

A few pics while the repotting was under way.










The new pot has a strong lip which I think goes well with the overall powerful presence of this tree.








Repotting completed! This time the tree was seated lower in the pot as compared to how it was before which always felt too high for me. It was also rotated slightly clockwise to increase its movement towards the left.

Thanks Bri. I am very happy with this match. I've been working with Nao for the better part of last year to get this thing done. He killed it! The pot really helps ground this tree so much better. The Byron Myrick pot is very nice but I always missed the fact that it didn't have a lip.

Thanks! We handled the tree by secondary branch forks which have rough texture but no bark plates. Any areas with developed bark plates is off limits since they are extremely delicate and easily damaged.
