Kate M's American Hornbeam

nice project!
if the roots escaped you will get strong growth but also on your roots so if you want to develop the roots suitable for a bonsai pot you might have to prevent the tree from doing that in the future..
looks like it grew allot and recovered well :)

I've seen similar growth rates in my own Carpinus caroliniana trees. It happens when they divert all of their energy into a leader. More often, they're very bushy and distribute growth more evenly, but, occasionally, just a couple of shoots get very thick very fast.

Going for taper is always wise.. no such thing as an mistake rooting in the ground if you get a bit more taper i would say in your case. Looking good 👍

Decided to cut down the new leader yesterday. There is a new tiny branch that started to grow on the opposite side of the cut and I think it'll give it a better chance to harden off before winter or maybe not...
Cut off part is over 6 feet tall.

You are doing a great job with this tree, keep it up! I think I'm going to start letting some of my collected trees with big wounds to heal escape into the ground for a year or two as well.
