Separate or wait? An American Hornbeam Air-Layer tail.

I dug up what will hopefully be a nice American Hornbeam raft in some years down the road. In the meantime I’ve attempted to airlayer the tops off of two of the trunks. Looking for some advice with separation.

What do yall think?

If you think you have enough roots, you could separate now, but waiting for cooler weather (September) is safer.

Disclaimer- I've layered loads of A. palmatums but no hornbeams.

I separated last years air layers mid to late August and all was fine. Have not done hornbeams. Could base it on weather to ensure not too hot when you do separate
