Is bonsai art? - inspired by BVF

It's not an issue, arguing is just a little side hobby which I enjoy from time to time. :D
I don't think so...

I mean I am not some smart guy like yourself... offering up loads of BS as Counseling. .. and stuff.

But, if I was... smart and all... I would say you seem to worry about what the fuck other people do and say... a little to much.

LOL! It may interest you to know that my day job for the past 30+ years is as a board certified psychiatrist - and yes, you have hit the nail on the head, and that was my intent in writing the question. At this time in this culture 90% of everything is about narcissism, and our enfeebled underlying self-esteem demands that we be special folks. If we be doing bonsai, it bloody well better be an art, and we bloody well better be thought of by others and ourselves as "Artists"! (No accident that my album is named "Trees of a Hobbyist.")
Pure gold.

Nah, I sleep like a baby.

I mean... you were really quick to try and point out other people's inferiority complex...

Right?

So... what up with yours?

See.. I kinda got you pegged as one of those kind of people... that aren't really happy and shit...

Unless they are making others try and kinda feel like it...

Shit... that is. ..

What's ''up'' with it? Well I know my limitations. And I have self doubt. Is that what you mean?

Lol. That's funny....shit that is.
See you're having fun now. That's good!

Self doubt...
Why?

All those 30 years of doing Bonsai and stuff...

See... I would of thought you actually had your shit together?

You sure walk the talk... so to speak?

Is that a question?

Perhaps... though...
You could answer this riddle and stuff.

Seeing that we Artsy folks... are just trying to somehow prove we are better than the common man... and shit.

Why is it that with just about every post or thread, or even the videos I do... seeing that you've seen them...

I Try and show that there is no big mystery to doing Bonsai?

That you do not have to be some sort of master to try and do the things masters are doing? That with practice... a lot of hard work... and a willingness to succeed... anyone can do this?

I mean...

This seems odd...
Right?

That I could somehow... think I am better than everyone...

Yet... spend pretty much every post trying to show them there is nothing special here?

I mean... odd to me at least?

What happened?

You got kinda quite and stuff?

I mean...

Was the riddle to hard?

Oh what a bunch of bullshit! Even Thelonious Monk (a true artist and genius) said to his fellow musicians ''Why can't you do it? It's there'' Now you're talking crap. You get pleasure out of telling people it's easy when in reality you know that it isn't for many. It boosts your ego. I get it. I can read you like a bad novel. :p

Whew!
I was beginning to think I lost you...

Glad to know your safe and sound!

I love Monk... he is probably my favorite out of all the "greats" of Jazz. I have always loved how he never played to fast... never too slow. .. just in the pocket! With a groove... that to be honest... I think inspired a lot of the funk movement of the late 60's- 70's...

But, I do have to ask... Why so?

Is doing Bonsai hard?

I mean... is applying wire some skill only a couple can do?

What about bending a branch?
What is the worst that could happen?
It breaks? The branch dies? The tree dies?

Wanna take a guess at how many branches I have broken over the years? How many trees or branches I have lost?

I mean... if I was some amazing person... you know the Artsy kind... this kinda shit wouldn't happen... right?

I mean...
You can't really assume you can have your cake and it it too...
Can you?

I mean... you can't possibly say I think I am better than everyone. .. and when I say it is all about practice and more practice... that there is no great mystery. ..

Then tell me I am better than everyone? And there is some great mystery. ..

MichaelS.

I follow your notion of "incomplete".

You see a bigger picture than most.

A deeper thinker....

Don't Fucking drown in this shallow pool trying to deflate the swim bladder of lesser fish.

Leave them in the shallows.

You'll end up wanting to slap yourself in the face With a Box jellyfish if you try to make sense of this here popcorn play.

Anyone who's definition of art is such that a photograph may not be considered art is safely ignored as not having any idea what the words they use mean. Rarely have I seen a word salad as skillfully tossed as your barking about what is and is not art. One would almost call it an artistic performance. A performance art, if you will.

I'm not sure why your bleating on the subject irritates me so, but boy are your opinions unconstrained by reality.

Michael,

please keep bleating.

And now a thought from a trained Fine Artist -

--- Fine Artist - is my job title only with extreme time - if my work is around --- maybe. just maybe I might be seen as an Artist. [ K ]

Thank you Grouper52 -------------- are you friends with Leslie Jackson, she also speaks of the narcissism. and is a Fine Artist.
Good Day
Anthony

Why does one artist need to be "better" than another?
I'd say that appreciation of art is such a subjective thing that there is no real way to say, with any intellectual honesty, that one artist is "better" than another...
People (artists) are different, and unique.... and their respective works display that.
Can't they be seen as individual artists with different mentalities and different skill sets, who create different things that are art to them?
I know many people who would say that Picasso's stuff is crappy.

And that person will have their own idea if what art is, and what appeals to them.

I guess my main point is, why does it seem like such a competition sometimes?
I don't think it's necessary to compete as an artist..... (not talking about judged shows, that's a little different... just in general...)
Especially with trees, since every tree is so unique.

Good day to you, as well, Anthony, and thank you as well.

I'm not aware of Ms. Jackson. Is she a "Bonsai Artist"? :)

Heinz Kohut, "The Father of Self-Psychology," proposed the idea that narcissism in our culture was increasing exponentially towards a critical mass, as each generation of narcissistic parents produced increasingly narcissistic offspring. His disciples began to run with this idea with published articles starting in the mid-1950's. The process was certainly proceeding apace over the next few decades, until a few extra rods of weapons-grade plutonium were thrown into the mix with the advent of the internet, "Like buttons," and selfy-capable cell phones, to the point now where there's no last minute save by James Bond that I can even imagine. A recent study by someone (although, sadly, probably not a Bonsai Artist) showed that more American Millennials aged 19-34 (34!!!) were living with their parents than with a spouse . . . uhhh, YIKES!!! We can only hope, I suppose, that they are using this time and opportunity - freed from any involvement in adult-responsibility activities - to improve the world otherwise, by becoming, for instance, an army of much-needed Bonsai Artists.

Are you saying that if all these fools learned greater technical skills with their cameras (the tool) they become artists?
Example:

A guy with absolutely no physical coordination plays football with his friend. And he throws the football worse than a 2yo. Do that make him an athlete? No. He's just playing a sport.

A guy who can't draw a straight line draw a happy face with a pencil. Do that make him an artist? No. He's making an art work.

A photographer usually don't just point and shoot randomly without any thought. There IS a compositilltion. Arrangement, mood, light all that stuff...
