Hi,

I have been growing a Japanese pine from a seed and its been doing well for nearly 2 years. This last week it has suddenly gone brown. Does anyone know why or if i need to do anything to help it. I really dont want it to die. Thanks

That tree looks very sad. Im wondering what kind of soil do you have it in? It looks like there is some pumice on the right side of the second photo, but on the left it looks like finer garden soil? Was there any change in the watering schedule lately?

Sorry to see this happen. No easy answers. We are going to need more information about the horticultural methods the tree received. Providing these data points would help

Type Media
Fertilization type, amount and last two fertilizations
Watering Frequency in past month
Rough amount of sun per day.
Any changes in the tree experienced in the past month

It is in bonsai soil. I went away and come back and it was brown. Do i need to re pot in fresh soil? Its out in the garden and we have had lots of sun but it was fine so not sure what has happened. I give it bonsai feed once a week.

I Went for 5 days. I left it with my husband who said he did water it!! Im hoping it will come back just wasnt sure if there was anything i could do to help it.

Yeah sorry to see that. 😔 Although, I still see some green in those candles. I would stop fertilizer and put a chopstick in soil to monitor the watering alot closer.

My first impression was dehydration. Five days this time of the year will sure do this. That’s the usual case for sudden death of needles. The other case, root issues seems to be ruled out by the information provided.

@Kodama advice to stop all fertilization is good. Would do this. In addition cover or mulch the surface of the media. Moss will work exceptionally well. This will keep a more moisture in the media. Then return to your normal watering practice, monitoring the media properly.

Good Luck. Could you please post again in a month. Would love to see the tree get healthy.

Cheers
