Hackberry--suggestions for what to do?

Wondering: Does the board the roots are screwed into significantly reduce or impede drainage?
Nah, its in a deeper container so the water table is low and I use coarse lava for my bottom layer of drainage substrate. My bonsai mix only goes on top, the sides, and slightly below the wooden board. There's enough space for the water to run down the sides too.

Nice. I hope to hear all about how the thread grafting works for those branches on the Hackberry tree.

I hope they take. I was able to get pretty tight holes without breaking off the buds. Drilled on the side the branch exits for a clean hole too. The only issue is that on my second thread graft I cracked the branch. Still wanted to use it so I had to pull it back so the crack would be supported in the hole. The branch lived and it budded but since it's a smaller bit sticking out of the tree it will take longer to set. It's the tiny twig in the 3rd picture. Pretty confident about the first one though. Given how vigorous these appear to grow I'm sure it should have no issues taking.

Excellent....you did what I didn’t do...drill from the exit side. I tried thread grafting but innocently drilled from the entry side and probably used a drill bit to large for the job.
